MORE NEW INFORMATION:

Was talking to another Chrysler engineer today who was driving a test mule for Dodge's new 4 cylinder vehicle that will be replacing the Dodge Caliber. It was in an Alfa Romeo body, 5-door hatch back the size of a Mazdaspeed 3 but he said the exterior won't look anything like the mule because they weren't done designing it yet. All he told me about the one he was driving was that it was a 2.4L, was in the VERY early stages of development and said there was talk around Chrysler of a future SRT-4 vehicle that would be built on this new platform (although he said no engine has been planned for it as of yet).

He also said the following was TRUE as of this date (but said anything can happen, but these are the plans as they sit)

- Challenger SRT-8 392 WILL get new 2012 SRT steering wheel (see Charger, 300, Cherokee)

- SubLime is NOT happening (confirmed GWE is the green they chose instead)

- Cuda is a NO-GO at this time.

- Challenger SRT-8 will run with the 6.4L engine until 2014

- NO production 426 Hemi

- Forced induction Hemi being discussed but leaning towards not doing it. Surprisingly he said they were contemplating a forced induction 5.7L but I think they are hesitant as it would muddy the trim lineup as a turbo/SC'd 5.7L would trump the 392 which is supposed to be the flag-ship.

- Unrelated to the Challenger but he also confirmed a 6-speed manual Charger SRT-8 is NOT going to happen with Chrysler sticking with the 8-speed autos with paddle shifters. (he said a LOT of car guys within the company are mad at this but the big wigs won't go for it "even though the business case is unbelievably easy to make")

- Next big release will be the new Dodge Viper which he says will blow the socks off everyone. After that Chrysler's main focus will be on many vehicles based on the new platform he was driving (fuel efficient small cars) but of course, SRT will still live on.

So I was @ work the last few days poking and prodding the Chrysler HQ engineers to give up precious nuggets of information and I was able to squeeze a few points of interest out of them;

2011 interior refresh is all that is currently planned between now and 2014 (no 2012 Charger style changes)

-Anyway, thought I'd share.
Once again, A very poor decision by Dodge.
Is the 2012 Challenger going to get the SRT performance pages in the MyGig like the 2012 Charger?
I saw a quote from a Dodge engineer promising something special for 2013. Not expecting too many changes for 2012, hopefully some hot new colors.
Maybe a T/A version, still waiting!
- NO production 426 Hemi
well, that sucks :disgust: Guess Dodge is not gonna respond to GM ZL1 and Ford's planned 600 hp Shelby.

ah, another special edition car with unique floormats, rims, and a coloured license plate bracket.

He said the Challenger was NOT going to get that big Charger-style screen because it "is tied in to too many systems and would require a complete interior overhaul" which is NOT slated to happen in the Challenger.

Although he did mentioned that the Jeep Grand Cherokee was going to get it for some reason. :scratchhead:

You two STOP IT! STOP IT!!! Criticizing Dodge and Gilles! How dare you?!?! Just because Dodge is acting like a stagnant pond doesn't mean anything should change!

Well, maybe it's a good thing. Each additional change creates possibility for more things to go wrong. As I recall, they still have several issues yet to work out with the existing systems:
- engine stalls while driving (still--4 model years and counting)
- door handle switch problems (issue new for MY2011)
- option group II speaker noise after car is turned off

They may have fixed (finally, after 3 model years...):
- cracking rocker panel issue
- wheel hop

Any other issues I'm missing?
- trunk lock issue?
Simple request, I want black back. Not brilliant black, or sparkle black, just plain old black please.
So then, two additional questions.

Is if the Challenger 2012+ is going to get the active dampening suspension system like the Charger 2012?

Is the Challenger 2012+ going to get the Ready Alert Braking and Rain Brake Support safety features?

Alongside that, with the 2011 be the only Challenger with the OBDII 1 1/2 version while future Challengers get the new computer programming like the 2012+ Charger?

Oh, thought it was interesting to read the 2012 Charger had a drag coefficient of 0.29. Compare that to the Challengers 0.35.

No idea.

My understanding is no--that the new braking features on the Charger require the newer, faster electronic bus system that the Challenger is not going to get (major overhaul to do so).

Well, what can we say, but that the Challenger is a big girl up front. :)
So the more I look at all of the extras that seems to be incorporated to the 2012 Charger, and the possibility of that coming to the Challenger, it seems like they are putting so many driving "safety" systems that it takes out the thinking part of driving.

Said in another way, you might as well let the car drive itself with all of the driving assist systems in the 2012+ models.

Personally, no thank you, I'll stick with me and not the computer doing the driving.

The Grand Cherokee won't be getting the new nav for a couple more years.

The 2012 Challenger SRT will come Standard with two Mode Active Damping Suspension.

Ready Alert braking and Rain Brake Support will both be standard on all models of the 2012 Challenger.

I wonder if these new systems will add MORE weight to these cars.

Oh wait, the new Charger weighs what?!!! Never mind!:disgust:
I wonder if these new systems will add MORE weight to these cars...
No worries, the new features combined will add less than 1,000 lbs.

So the 2012 Challenger will probably have the new CANBUS to support all of these additionals.

The Active Damping Suspension is very tempting.

-The 2012 SRT models will definitely have the new 900-watt/18-speaker system.
Introducing all these changes after one year of a refereshed model !!
This is really disappointing as I was really excited about getting my car after two weeks.
Now I think I will just cancel my order of the 2011 challenger SRT :disappointed:

Until it breaks soon after the warranty runs out... Sorry - shouldn't be negative but all that fancy stuff doesn't make that much difference and adds weight and fragility to the car.
