If you are like me and Sammy Hagar you can’t drive 55! So I wanted a clean covert system like the
. So I looked at every Radar detector, shifter, jammer out there and came across a great website called http://www.radardetector.org/ If you have $2,000 you can buy the Escort 9500ci. For a lot less you can get the Qi45 which has every band or radar and laser just like the 9500 w/o the GPS.
I bought one new on ebay for $480 or you can get it from Amazon for $499 Qi45 Radar Detector and the optional laser Shifter .(Which I will post next week when it comes in) The local car audio shop I went to wanted $599 for the radar not installed!
I had fun putting mine in my 2010 Challenger RT so I thought I would share with you some quick tips for a professional install to save you a couple hundred $$.

  1. First buy Buy the Escort Qi45
  2. Then buy a littelfuse mini add a circuit fhm200bp Amazon or I found one at Pepboys.
  3. You need to find an active switch you can tap into for power to be on the radar only when the car is on and running. The add a circuit is an easy fix. Use circuit #5 in the fuse box under the hood. Put the fuse that is in there in slot A and then the 10amp in slot B.

  4. You need to dismantle the instrument panel . Start on the left side and you can use a small flat head screw driver or just grab an pull. Once you get the small piece between the door and the dash you will see some screws. remove the one in the center. Now look under the steering wheel and you will find another screw. remove it. Start on the left side and gently pull till they pop out. That is pretty much how you remove the whole thing.
  5. Once you remove the cover that goes around the gauge take it and turn it upside down and drill and drill a small hole on the left edge under the tachometer gauge.

  6. Look for a place to go through the firewall
there was a plug you can push through for easy access to run the power wires from the inside box to the fuse box and the cable from the radar to the brain box inside. Once you push that rubber plug through, it’s a pain to get back so this is the only ******* portion of the install. Once you run the wires I used Gorilla black tape to seal it up again.
  7. Put the speedometer cover back on and remove the double sided tape and stick it to the bottom with the wire pulled through the hole on the left and it is a clean looking install with no wires showing.

  8. Next go to the front of the radiator and pull the plastic covers off that go between the grill and radiator. Use heavy duty 3m double stick tape and put 2 pieces side by side on the top of the radar.
Then stick it toward the middle of the grill.

  9. Run the wires along the front right side and zip tie them neatly and run through the firewall.
  10. Go back to the fuse box and attach the ground to the screw outside the fuse box. Crimp the black/red wire from the power box to the add a circuit and crimp it to the red wire. Insert the fuse in slot 5 and run the wire along the back left and zip tie it and run it through the firewall and like I said gorilla tape it so there is no chance of smell or water leakage.
  11. Plug the display into the interface box and the radar into the box and neatly tuck it under steering wheel then reassemble everything.

Hope this helps you have a clean looking professional remote radar detector install.

Hey 007. Looks like a fun and cost effective install. One I have found doing research on installed detectors/jammers is that the radar heads need to in front of or sticking through the grill. Otherwise, the plastic blocks the signal and you end up with a ticket you might not have gotten. Im no expert, just what i have picked up on Radar Forums. Cant wait to get mine done. Found this ...

Placing the receiver behind your plastic grill "could" effect the lazer reception, however it's your reaction against the police officers reaction. A jammer (Not realy jamming but reflecting the lazer away from the officers to reduce the time it takes to lock onto your vehicles speed only sometimes works and again it's your reaction against the officers)

Regarding x, k and ka bands, RF goes right through plastic and would not effect detection.

I have my Qi45 mounted just like above, but center towards the top edge and have found it to pickup all bands including lazer very well.

Again a radar detector is only there to assist you in the presents of radar. If you're the only person cruising down the highway and he has instant on, you're screwed.

If the OP does not mind, I can post some detailed images I used to help another forum member where and how to place the receiver..

Great unit, a bit pricy but well worth it.

I'm Invisable

So I got my "laser shifters" they call them that because jamming is illegal, but shifting the laser around your car makes you invisible.
Here is how I installed mine.

  • Take all the mounting brackets off the shifter and put one piece of 3m double stick tape on the bottom right side and one piece of Velcro on the left side. The height of the velcro and 3m is perfect to balance it out so that it is perfectly level.
  • peel off the protective film, run the wires through the grill and plug into the back of the radar and your done.
  • 20 min tops
On a side note after I installed I took a quick drive down to FL to watch the shuttle last launch and this radar saved my bacon 4 times on the way down and at least that many on the way back. Ka band, GA troopers on the side of the road shooting lasers at me like Han Solo and I DODGEd them all! It was a fun short "flight" down I-95 thanks to my stealth radar install :)
