2020 Scat Pack 400 miles has a 1-2 down shift clunk that's worse when cold. The trans down shifts are so quick it sounds like back lash clunk form the rear end. This is a new vehicle so I can't imagine what it will sound like when it hits 20K. Any thoughts on this subject. When you pay this much money for a car should it sound like this after 400 miles?

So your saying it's not normal?
Doesn't sound normal at all. Is yours auto or manual? Sounds like auto from your first post. I have no clunking sound with shifts, cold or warmed up.

Mine's a daily, but only have 2800 miles on it in the year I've had it. Never had any type of odd sounds from shits or the rear end.

This is in auto not sport or track and costing down to a stop light. What a bummer. Have to go back to the dealer. I hate that place !
Something's off. I have snappy shifts in sport and track, but still never any clunks. Again, try to get a recording of the sound, if possible, before heading to the dealer. That way they can't pull we didn't find anything excuse.

It's probably the transmission adaptives. If it was driven hard right out of the gate, it adapted improperly.

The other thing to think about is the DFCO. If it happens right at about 12mph, it has nothing to do with the transmission.

As mentioned take it in. Also, as mentioned the transmission may have adapted wrong. If you car was on the last at all, and had more than say 20 miles, it was probably test driven or driven by someone there that hammered on it a little. It could have thrown it off.

I have the 8-speed in my Ram Truck and wife's Jeep GC. Both of those vehicles have over 30k and more on them. Transmission never clunks in a township except very rarely. Usually when coming off an offramp that is a loop and it has to jump 4 or 5 gears due to rapid reduction in speed. Even then it is rare. If it is doing it all of the time it needs to be looked at.

Don't feel bad, I bought a car while it was in transit. I have been going through an ordeal because the inside of the windshield has a gouge in to that was obviously done at the factory and the steering wheel is coked 2 degrees to the left. The worst part if the transporter chipped the paint right on the body line on the passenger side right by the door handle. They have offered to paint it to fix it. Problem is to do it right, because of where it is, they will have to repaint nearly half of the car to blend it in. My car is indiGO blue so I am hesitant that it won't look right when done. With touch-up paint it is hardly noticeable but still.

It’s funny you mentioned the dealer road test because the car had 12 miles on it and I only noticed today that to top speed was 98 mph and I have not gone near that speed. I am so pissed but I have 360 miles and there not going to believe so it’s a moot point. Sorry to hear about your troubles you would thing that dodge has earned best in quality by JD POWERS but I don’t believe it. I also had a exhaust pipe that was tilted so there quality control is terrible. I think you’re correct and ask the to reset the trans adapts And see what happens.

Did you get this fixed? Mine has the same issue exactly. Someone had too much fun on the test drive before I bought it. Dealer says the sound is normal.

Hi, I went threw hell because my dealer has untrained people working in there dealership from the manager to the mechanics but that aside at the end of 2 weeks and a driveshaft that didn’t need to be replaced I drove a few SP with the 3.09 posi and some are worse and some were the same. The answer is that this is NOT normal but it is a characteristic of the car meaning that Dodge can’t build a differential that has tighter tolerances to alleviate the back lash Clunk. I personally turn up the HK stereo and enjoy the sound of the exhaust and the monster under the hood.

Thanks for the reply. If it’s NOT normal, then what is the long term on the transmission? It hasn’t gone away at all?

The noise is the same but I only have 1,200 miles and the car is in storage for the winter. The transmission is not where the noise is generating from its the rear differential. I have read other posts where people have had the differential replaced only to have the noise return after a few hundred miles. The differential is not serviceable and is only a replaceable item. The other people that have this noise with anywhere from 25 to 50 thousand miles say the the noise has not got worse or better. I was a GM mechanic for almost 30 + years and had a hard time believing this is normal but the more research I did and the other cars I have driven plus the posts it seems like it is normal.

My 2020 does have a abnormal clunk when pulling up to a stop sign while cold .... let's say. Once it's up to operating temperatures I do not notice it. Car has like 2700 miles on it. It doesn't really bother me that much since I know once the car is at temp it will go away...lol
