You are correct but I have to drive 20 miles on the highway and then heat expansion takes over and the noise is gone like you said. This is my retirement car so I only drive it around town so I notice it more than the average driver. I do enjoy the car immensely and have owned many muscle cars like Camaro SS/RS, Oldsmobile 442, Ford Mustang Pace Car, Ford Torino, Barracuda. Nova SS etc ........ I bought this new so my expectations were high but owning so many different cars shows me that they all have there issues. My Camaro had a 6 speed Tremic that had to be rebuilt 3 times. The Mustang leaked oil from every orifice. My 442 that I had in high school got about 8 miles to the gallon (LOL).

My 2020 does have a abnormal clunk when pulling up to a stop sign while cold .... let's say. Once it's up to operating temperatures I do not notice it. Car has like 2700 miles on it. It doesn't really bother me that much since I know once the car is at temp it will go away...lol
The sound can be described as an old boot rolling to the front of the trunk a the car slows down. I have 220 miles on the car. I’m a person who can’t stand noises when driving. I live in the south so planned on this being my DD. Maybe not the right car for me.

2020 Scat Pack 400 miles has a 1-2 down shift clunk that's worse when cold....
1-2 is usually considered an upshift. :)

I will get something similar on the low speed downshift at light throttle. Both on my Scat Pack and 5.7 Grand Cherokee (same transmission in both). However, I only get it when I leave either vehicle in Sport mode. I don't observe the problem when using the regular drive mode. I am guessing it does a hard downshift because of the performance drive mode and it expects me to stab the throttle any second.

The only time the clunk is gone is in Eco mode because the car starts in second gear and the transmission shifts softer. Sorry to hear that you may not keep the car and believe me that it crossed my mind also but I guess I just came to terms with it. Good Luck

If you haven't installed a Power Commander you might want to try that. It might be just me but all the weird sounds went away when I installed that. I set it in Sport mode and then set it very light..... this seems to be the perfect setting for me. If it doesn't cure your problem you will however not have any lag upon acceleration. I really do like it.

All kind of noises are prevalent while in drag mode, or sport mode. I'm willing to say that in normal mode the sounds are just about gone. I really haven't tried different modes to set out and see if it changes. I drive around mostly in sport mode.I just let it rip..lol... whatever happens just happens.

I've got a 03 Dodge Ram regular cab with 408 Vortech V1 supercharger and a 67 Plymouth Barracuda with 360/4speed/3.55 gears I can relate to different issues...lol

Did you get this fixed? Mine has the same issue exactly. Someone had too much fun on the test drive before I bought it. Dealer says the sound is normal.
2021 scat pack charger, 1400 miles on it doing the clunk, they told me there is alittle play in the axle for when us idiots drive it like idiots and that it is perfectly normal, the play is to avoid the rear diff getting fried, this is AFTER they replaced axle, drive shaft, and rear diff haha

yeah I have heard it sometimes, I thought it was the driveshaft. Now if I remember in manual mode, to down shift when coming up to the stoplight, in a normal fashion 5,4, 3, 2, it will go to first quietly. quiet silky smooth.
Now if I am in sixth gear and stop quickly and not down shift, I can get a clunk. ( sometimes) its just depends. I think it has to row through all those gears, to get to first ,
I wasn't worried about it though. I though Ummmmmm,
nice ZF-8HP telling me its there.
There is a lot of torque from the motor, and the ol 'torque converter' is is trying to stay on top of all that torque!
Yeah I have heard it a few times, I have 1849 miles. Not worried about it at this time. I don't want anyone else touching it.
I'll put thicker differential fluid in the differential, that will help cushion it. They probably have thin fluid in the differential to get better fuel economy.

I can always tell when its time to change the the differential fluid in the truck. You get a bigger 'clunk' going in gear.
Heavy duty is good.
best regards

30k on my '16 SP A8. I drive with Sport Mode "on" 100% of the time.

A short summary, based on mine.

The A8 has a "manual" sound and feel under certain conditions.

Been this way since day one off the truck for delivery, still the same today.

I've been happily hammering the 392/A8 for 5 1/2 years. No issues.

Perfect combination for this car. If you want quiet, soft and squishy, this ain't it.

I wouldn't want it any other way.

Dude....same...frick'n...thing happened to my 50th anniversary scat pack shaker. This was my first time buying a brand new car, my dream car at that. Only had 9 miles on it. After 3 days of just driving locally on the streets I noticed a "thunk" noise on the driver side rear when I applied the brake and then again when the rpm was going down from 2 - 1 then when I would come to a complete stop and apply the brake I would hear a louder "thunk" noise. I took it to my local dealership Scott Robinson CDJ. I left a box of car washing equipment in my truck as I was going to wash her after the service. Get this...they legit had the nerve after only having my car for 2 hours to tell me that the "thunking" noise was coming from my box in my trunk. I laughed so hard as the noise had been happening for 3 weeks at the time after buying it and I had only put the box in the trunk the night before. I explained all of this to the service department at Scott Robinson CDJ and they insisted that it was my box making the "thunking" noise and that if it still made the noise to call them the next day. The next day I drove to get gas and as soon as I turned my block every time I applied the brake "THUNK" I called Scott Robinson CDJ many times but they ghosted me smh. Finally I decided to take it back where I bought the car at Punete Hills CDJ where the service department there later found the issue to be a bad rear differential. Bad news was that to get a new replacement I would have to wait a month as it was on a national back order. 2 months later the part finally arrived. I took my car in and after 2 days they called me and said it was still making the "thunking" noise and that they're pretty sure it's a bad transmission as well. After waiting another month the new transmission finally arrived and my car is running great now.

Crazy long story. I just hope no one else has to go through this like I did. First time buying a dodge as well.

When I got my '16 last year it was doing it in sport mode only. It seems to have lessened considerably so maybe it is linked to the adaptives.

A friend on mine went through a similar thing with a '20 SP wide body. Clunks on decel downshifts with the A8
his had ~ 4,000mi when he took it in. The following items were done

replaced diff (didn't resolve)
replaced driveshaft (didn't resolve)
replaced valve body (didn't resolve)
finally a new transmission (includes new torque converter) - only notices slight clunk on downshifts when cold, once it warms up, it goes away.

he'll live with this as its much better than how it was originally.

His prior '19 SP widebody (A8) didn't do this at all (traded the car because the dark color was a lot of maintenance)

Pull fuse 29 in the under-hood fuse block. Wait a few minutes. Reinstall fuse, drive EASILY in stop and go situations for an hour or so. See if that fixes it.

The dealer reset the adapts and it changed nothing. I have 3,000 miles on the car now and I only notice from time to time. Getting it hot does help with expansion of the gears so I just enjoy the ride.

If you have HP Tuners and know a little about how to use it, you can try changing these 2 DFCO enable settings:

Thx but for me the car is to new as it would void the warranty. I was told that even if you change back to your old computer the BCM stores the information so no tunes or swaps just yet.

I'm doing the break in period so driving it easy. Happens under 12mph so I don't think it's decelerating fuel shut off.
I’m late here but why 13 mph? Mine clunks and has been since 4K miles and currently has 12k. Took it to dealer TWICE an the SRT guy said it was a “normal” downshift but my buddies say their scat packs do not do what mine does. I’m going to be absolutely furious if I go there a third time. Im guessing I need to tell them it might be the fuel cut off??

I noticed the exact same thing with my 2020 Scat at 17k miles when I bought it and it was never a "warm and fuzzy" feeling thats for sure and felt cheap to me smh.

I know when I traded it in for the Hellcat that **** never happened again. Just was never happy with my Scat to be honest it was a little disappointing. Looked dope tho!

2020 Scat Pack 400 miles has a 1-2 down shift clunk that's worse when cold. The trans down shifts are so quick it sounds like back lash clunk form the rear end. This is a new vehicle so I can't imagine what it will sound like when it hits 20K. Any thoughts on this subject. When you pay this much money for a car should it sound like this after 400 miles?

This is in auto not sport or track and costing down to a stop light. What a bummer. Have to go back to the dealer. I hate that place !
Mine does the same thing goin down from 4-3 and now it does it in 3rd when I’m in traffic and barely tap the gas it clunks and it also clunks sometimes when I let off the gas around that same gear. I’ve been to the dealer TWICE about this whenever it was only doing it on down shifts an the guy brushed jt off as “normal” LOL but now it’s gotten way worse and does it when I decelerate coasting to a stop sign, when I barely accelerate and when I let off the gas in 3rd gear. This is s a joke. I jus left them a message they’re gettin this car back on Monday an I’m leaving it an gonna get a rental from them. It’s gotten way worse definitely take your car up there and make them do something bc I let it slide until it’s gotten noticeably worse and worse and does it a lot more. Mine has 12k miles bc it’s been my daily and I drive 100 miles to work an back daily but I’m buying another car, a beater, this weekend and an gonna drive it back n forth instead to keep the miles off this one
