I'm shopping for installers to put on some custom wheels, and a guy at a local hot rod/resto shop said they static balance wheels.

When I was a mechanic, the static balancer was the old dust-covered POS in the corner that was left over from before high speed balancing.

I actually take my car up to 150 now and again, so proper balance is important. Is static balancing a thing people are doing again, or is this guy trying to snow me into using him to install my rims when he doesn't have proper balancing equipment?

With today's today's technology the static balancer should remain in the corner.

yes - static balancing is not done any more.

the modern spin balance machines do a far better job. Its not the 1950s any more.

that's best left in a museum display, right along with inner tube tires

When I worked for Allied Discount Tire Stores virtually every Static Balance would come back with bad Vibrations.
Get a Real Balance at a Real Tire / Store and do it right.
