Supercharger Question

Is it safe to say that adding a SC only shaves your 1/4 time by a second to second and a half. If so then whats the big deal paying all that money for so little time. 3500$ all the way up to 7000$ for a max 2 seconds seems a little crazy. I guess it voids the warranty also? I am not a gear head so I don't really get it. I do get the idea of extra power, but at what cost. If I am not understanding this properly please let me know. I am not bashing SC's, i love the concept. I guess if I could afford it I might feel different. Thanks,

Thats pretty close.
If anything it is a little less even.
They are way more fun to drive though. It's not for all people I agree. I for one would have a hard time going back.

You will have a near impossible time trying to spend your 7k elsewhere to gain that much time/power (outside of NOS). 1 second is HUGE! Not sure what my car ran bone stock, but I bet I took almost 1.5 seconds off just with an SC. Don't underestimate what a difference that is. Go drive an 11.5 second car, and then a 13 second car, and you will see what all the hype is about. And the car still drives like stock until you get on it. No rumble from a cam or anything like that. Not that it's a bad thing, but the car can be driven just like it was in stock form until you get aggressive with it.

Easy, speed costs money,even though the increments seem small to you they are big when you go racing. At some point every improvement hits a wall and money buy's the next increment. The question is how fast do you want to be and can you afford it.

I guess thats the key, how fast is fast enough, and what do you use it for. eg. racing. I dont, although I would like to try it some. I guess if I did I would understand more. Running a 11.5 I know is fast, again if I had the dough I might change my mind.

How much faster would the SC be than a RT with a Catback exhasut, CAI, tuner, etc..? just guessing, a second? If so thats about 1500-2000$, and you can install it yourself. Just curious what it would cost to have a SC installed by a Professional

Yeah one second or more in the quarter is a huge deal! People spend Tons of time and money to shave only tenths of a second off their times. as far as voiding the warranty it depends which system you go with...obviously any time you mod an engine you can void the power train part of the warranty. This is true with suercharger, heads and cam , or nitrous. However the only one of the above that can be installed and also have a drivetrain warranty would be a supercharger. Vortech and magnacharger offr drivetrain warrantys as an option if certain conditions are met.

If you are not going to race your Challenger, spending thousands on a supercharger is a little "over-kill." Where can you use the increased power without getting into serious trouble?

I was never a track person, but I like to go once in a while just to know where I stand. For me, if I own a muscle car, I am not happy owning it when I know there a tons of other stock cars that can smoke me. So now I have the looks, and the power to back it up. Do I race on the streets, no. However, the rare occasion that I do get on it against someone, I smile all over again about my purchase.

I'm not knocking having a stock car, just saying why I got mine, and I would do it all over again.

I would venture to guess that more folks that have superchargers on their challenger's do not race them at all or rarely race them, I think the racers are actually in the minority. A lot of folks just want more power for their street car, and boost is addictive!

Last year I coulda cared less about racing or any of that and just wanted more power. I slapped a supercharger on my 4Runner a couple years ago and since then I've been hooked on them. They just make a night and day difference driving the car around. Ease on the throttle and it's burying you in the seat LOL.

I hit the strip for the first time in my life at ChallengerFest last year and it was a TON of fun so now I go every now and then just to see if I can improve my time.

I was playing around with my GoPro camera yesterday. This thread has motivated me to edit the little video clips together to post them up. It gives a decent representation of what it's like driving one of these with a blower on it.

Yeah if you have the money, I'd definitely go for a supercharger because buying bolt on will sure add up quickly! BUT you can run low to mid 12s w/o a supercharger.

This is what I've done, and my best is a 12.45 with a 15mph headwind..some of the things you can find cheaper though.

Predator=$300
MBRP catback=$900 (I think thats what I got it for lol)
JBA shorties=$330
Catless mids=$270
Custom tune=$500
K&N drop in filter=$40?
two 17x9" rims=$380
two 275/40/17 MT ET=$420
Total=$3,140

Hoping to get some welds all the way around though now, should cut unsprun weight down by about 70 or so lbs. (which is pretty big) After that, I'd like to get a LSD rear along with a 3000-3200rpm stall. These should give me around another 2tenths in the 1/4mile

two Weld skinnies w/tires= about $1,100+
two Weld rears=$984
convertor=$800?
LSD=$1000+

Grand Total=$6600+(if you went straight ahead and bought weld rears, instead of buying cheaper rims lol) for low to mid 12s

So in the grand scheme of things, I'd push for the SC. If I had known I'd get this much into it, I would have been saving a long time ago! lol
But the mods I'll be adding on from now on, will go nicely with a SC (whenever that time comes lol). I actually just bought some Brembos, so my car will be fully rear for an extra 100hp+ lol

Go for a ride sometime with someone that has a supercharger on a Challenger. That will answer your question. You will be hooked!!!!! and you will be looking for a convenience store to help finance the mod.

Well I appreciate all the knowledge from everyone. I hope not to ride with someone who has a SC, I dont want the urge to splurge. That being said I certainly love the diversity on the site and ones ability to appreciate all views.

Thanks. In a couple of places you can see where I get on the gas a bit and the back in searches for traction as the blower whines. I think that's the essence of the supercharged experience LOL.

I have the SMS challenger 2010 6spd Supercharger and like it's been said you can drive normal with it with some winding noise form it, but when I go WOT the car just goes wild unable to keep it on the road with good street tires. This week end was Dyno Day and the SMS a 5.7L pulled a 475hp @ rear wheels @ 470 tq. 7# boost. and there was more to go but @ around 5800 rpm it rev.limits. The 5.7L is a 370Hp @ crank. Back in the 60's it was a 1,000 dollars for every sec. faster. Today it cost's a lot more.

Yes, but cars also cost only a couple thousand back then as well. If you use an inflation calculator you will see that $1000 in 1967 is approx $6700 today - which, coincidentally, is about the cost of one of our superchargers.
