My Belle II is down for the count, at the dealer. While cruising home last Friday, in the usual rush hour traffic, a downshift in my A8 was particularly hard. Check engine light came on, and she went into limp mode, stuck in 3rd gear. Service Writer checked the code, said it was for an "Improper 3rd gear ratio". He had no idea what that meant. I'll find out Tuesday. While she's there, I'm having the rear end whine checked out, and the infernal rattle in the drivers side B-Pillar looked at. Wish me luck! First major issue, 26K miles. 2016 Scat Pack, A8.

UPDATE: Just got the call: It seems a flash of the Trans PCM is all that needed. But I thought I had the latest update? They also claimed to have fixed the rattle, and the rear end whine requires a new driveshaft, which is on order, and they replaced the rear end fluid. Picking her up at 5. Cross your fingers she is fixed!

Dang. The dealership here would have taken 5 visits and some yelling to get that much stuff done. I guess we'll see. Hopefully it's all good.

Why did you install that improper third gear?

I was drinking heavily!

Anyways, all is fixed except the read end whine is still there. I'm just gonna leave it, it's not that bad, I just turn up the radio!

Well, she acted up again. Had a few hard downshifts happen on Friday, going real slow. Saturday afternoon I was coasting down a long steep hill in my neighborhood, and BING!, the Check Engine lights is on, car goes into limp mode, stuck in 3rd. Drove it straight to the dealer, at 4:30 on a Saturday. Service Dept closes at 5:00, but they wouldn't even open the door. The Service Writer comes outside and asked what happened, and then he reluctantly wrote it up. His response was hilarious: he stated to me "those A8 transmissions suck. They are a CVT, and can't handle the power. They should go back to a A5 trans like before. I should know, I used to be a service technician!"

Fast forward to Monday evening, I called the dealer to see what is going on with my car. This other guy looks it up, and says "all that was written down is that the check engine light came on". No mention that I told them what happened. Now that they know it's the trans, but their trans specialist is booked solid, so maybe they can look into it in a few days. Great.

The same thing happened to me about a month and a half after I purchased my 2016 Scat Pack Shaker and they replaced the transmissions straightaway.

Just got a call from the service writer. He claimed that NO ONE but the ONE trans tech they have can hook up the code reader. Really? I told him I could go to Auto Zone and they could do it for FREE. I also reminded him this is the 4th time I have had it in for trans problems, and I am reaching Lemon Law status. Do you really want to buy it back? Uh, no. He relented, and agreed to have someone hook it up to find out the code. Just called me back, said it was the same as before, 3rd Gear Improper Gear Ratio.
They have 5 cars ahead of me in line, looks like it will be next week before they can even start working on it. Wish me luck!

The weather is going to be great, starting today.....and my car is sitting in their lot, bumming out.

Been there. Mine started slipping and after nearly two weeks at the dealer they called and said that they could find the problem and told me to come pick it up. I drove all the way out there and didn't get a block down the road before light came on and I got 2nd gear ratio improper. They had the car for about a month between troubleshooting and replacing. All the while, I was driving a damn caravan around during the summer months. Talk about being emasculated. Luckily this time around I called Dodge Cares right off the batt and had them involved on Day 1. I waited longer the year before when my motor dropped a valve and after the dealer was feeding me lines of BS. Dodge Cares covered a months car payment and my rental fees. If it wasn't for them I would have probably burned down both dealers in the western part of the state.

They finally tested the fluid, it came back as being burnt? I don't pound on this car, she is my daily driver and I plan on keeping her for a long time.
Dodge replied to just replace it, so I will get her back Wednesday I hope. Been at the dealer since April 14th! Maybe if they hired some more wrenches. ........

The fluid being "burnt" suggests a clutch pack wasn't being fully engaged but slipping if not all the time way longer than it should slip. Hard to know what needs replacing in the existing transmission and if the factory/dealer guess wrong the car could become a bring back nightmare. Under this situation a replacement is the best solution.

The bad transmission goes back and almost certainly will undergo some extensive postmortem to try to understand what went wrong. Probably just a component failure as the A8 transmission appears to be quite robust.

Good thing you still have warranty - you don't want to know how much the bill would be for replacement + labor for the R & R.

Today is May 1st, I finally get my car back! It took them 14 days to finally look at it. They have only ONE Trans Tech, and there were 6 cars in front of me. After all that time, they did a test of the fluid last Thursday, which came back burnt. Dodge told them to replace the trans. They've had too many times where a fluid change and a cleaning of the valve body does not help, so they just replace it. Lucky for me they had 1 sitting on a shelf, but we had to wait for the new hoses.

17 days from dropping it off to getting it repaired is too darn long. Had they tested the fluid a few weeks ago, they could've had all the parts ordered, ready to go. And this dealer is supposed to be #1 in customer service in the Portland area? I'd hate to visit #2. Oh wait, I think I did, that place takes 2.5 hours to do an "Express Oil Change".

Rockster makes a good point, maybe the clutch was slipping. I would notice a slight surging under full power, I thought it was just me, or the tires were slipping because of the awesome power of this great car.

Usually its between gear "flare" or slip you might notice. Its pretty rare on a modern trans to burn the clutch pack up so quick.

hey atl east they fixed it and you got a new trans 0 miles. I hope the trans warranty goes for a while.

Wow, the mechanic smell is STRONG this time. You know what I mean, your cars been in the shop, sitting in the oily funky atmosphere, absorbing that into the interior. I'm going to have to do an interior wipe down, febreeze the heck out of it, leave the windows down while parked inside. My entire garage smelled like oil this morning. Ugh. The Dealer sent me an email asking me to review their service. This is gonna be fun.

Mine leaves tools in my car more than once.

I gotta run a neat swivel socket/torx 1/4" drive back over to them at some point and lead a discussion on checking your tools before you let a job go.

Atleast it was on the floor board not in the intake.

I wonder if they spilled ATF on something (front cradle, front belly pan) when the cooler lines were disconnected or replaced...

Looks like he took a co-worker along for a test ride, because I found greasy boot prints on the passenger floor mats. Cleaned those up, wiped down the greasy steering wheel, and left the windows open at night while in the garage. Took her for a long drive, that seemed to clear the essence of oilyness.

Performance wise, she is a MUCH more fun ride! Now my eyes water twice as much when I drop the hammer.

Bad news is now I have an intermittent squeak/rattle. Sounds like 2 quarters bouncing in your hands, you hear it when you shut the door, or when idling next to a wall in the drive thru. Comes and goes. Definitely from the outside, underneath the vehicle. Good news is the slight rattle I always had coming from the lower grille area is gone.

Had a scare this past Friday. My wife and I carpool, so we switch off between my Challenger and her Charger SXT, so I ahdn't driven her in a week. I was going to take it in to Discount Tire to fix a slow leak, but when I backed her up, I found a nice big puddle of fluid, which looks kinda red. I took her to the dealer explained what happened, and they said they would take a look at it.....in a week! Geez. Anyways, they called me a few hours later, and said they found time to put her on a lift and look around. They got the trans tech to take a peek....and he noticed it was the oil filter! The gasket from the previous filter stuck around, so they removed the filter and the extra gasket, replaced my SRT filter, topped off the fluids, and now she's ready to rock!
I poured some elcheapo cat litter on the oil slick, if that doesn't work, what should I use?

Clay cat litter will absorb most of it.

What I've found is mix up a small batch of laundry detergent to break down the rest. If its smooth concrete, it will be easier to clean up.

rough concrete - that takes several passes to get the stain out
