Hi everyone. I've been doing some searching for used SRT8's as well as pricing RT models. I was wondering what those of you more experienced with this car think of the following.
I have found some 2010 SRT's (6.1L) with very low miles for approximately 35,000. (One has only 750 miles) I have also found some SRT8's with the 392 for approximately 40,000 with similar mileage. I'm also considering an RT because of the bang for the buck, but I've been spoiled by the "feel" of the 392. I question is which is the better buy, considering that it will be my DD.
In particular would a 2010 SRT8 be a good choice compared to a 2013 for $5000-7000 more? Is the newer car worth the extra cost? What are the performance differences? I'm not concerned about the actual age of the car, I have no intention of letting it go for a very long time.
Thank you!

I can't speak for the SRT folks, but I love my R/T. It's my daily driver, and one heck of a daily driver at that. I get really good gas mileage, especially if I'm doing all highway miles (27.5 mpg is what I got on a trip to Florida last month). In my opinion it's a great bang for the buck. You get plenty of power for the price if you ask me. But I also didn't want an SRT when I was looking for a Challenger anyways. If you're looking for more power then you probably want to go with an SRT, which is where I leave it to the other guys on here. I can say that I've seen a lot of older SRT's for prices similar to newer R/T's, and at low miles. Just takes some searching I guess.

On a side note, welcome to ChallengerTalk and best of luck in finding your Challenger!

I agree with ToxicTouchR/T, the R/T is a great daily driver for a bunch of reasons. That's not to say the SRT can't be a good daily driver, many folks here drive their SRTs daily. I don't but I am preserving my cars for the next guy lol. The difference btw between my 6.1 and my 6.4 (392) is like WOW!!! The 6.1 is nice, it's fast but the upgraded 392 has so many little improvements and that 392 engine is just pure awesome!!! If you had both cars for a week/month you would know doubt get a 392 SRT. Maintenance and consumables will be slightly more for the SRT than the R/T, especially on tires, (Performance tires) and yeah gas too.

My best advice to you is to actually drive every single car you are considering and then make a decision.

Oh and I only paid $38k for my YJ SRT several months ago and it only had 1500 miles on it, almost brand new still!! This is a car that stickered $53,500.00 new. There are great deals to be had out there.

My 2012 392 with M6 is my commuter every other day. I have a 12-mile/20 minute commute (each way) and just love driving it to/from work.

I bought it new nine months ago: it had been sitting in the showroom for over a year; it had an MSRP of $51,000 and picked it up for $46,500. I may have been able to haggle a little harder, but I really wanted a BSP with silver stripes and M6, and this was the last one left in the whole country.

My car now has 8,000+ miles (1,200 of which were just to drive it home from N.E. CO!): it still feels and smells as new. I've seen similar vehicles listed on Carmax for around $40,000.

I can't see buying the under 1,000 mile SRT for $35 thousand and turning it into a daily driver. It is already four years old and the value in that specific car is the low miles (a collector's car). There is enough of a performance difference between the 6.1 and the 6.4 to get the 6.4. If the horsepower is not that important then a new R/T is the way to go.

If you drive your car in winter weather too I'd get the R/T instead. Easier to manage and brakes to clear 18" snow tires with wheels. I'd imagine getting 20" snow tires for the stock SRT rims would be costly.

I've been more than happy with my R/T. As mentioned earlier, it's a great bang for your buck.

SRT has a lot more power though and would be more fun to drive. If you can manage it I'd look for a second hand 392. It has much greater low end punch than the 6.1.

I have a near perfect condition 2010 SRT-8 with 18K miles that I am going to put up for sale to downsize. It is my wife's car that she drove to work on only nice days, and never driven after first snow even on good days. We are considering selling it because I already have a 2012 SRT-8 and we are just going to share that car. I am going to put ads out in the next couple days when I get the time... PM if interested... Good luck...

I think as a DD it will come down to two things for you: cost and what you want.

If cost is a concern, the R/T will save you in purchase price of the vehicle, gas and insurance. I know that it's a 2 MPG difference but depending on gas prices and how many miles you put on it as a daily driver it can add up over time. Also, there will probably be insurance differences. Before I picked up my car I was able to contact my agent, provide VINs of the cars I was looking at and they let me know insurance cost per year. There is a difference between models and based on your insurance there could be enough of a difference to weigh in your decision.

If the cost of vehicle, insurance and MPG doesn't bother you between the models then only think about picking up what you want and think about it from the perspective of from one year from now would you be wishing that you would have picked a different model?

I picked the R/T as it was the best compromise of performance, options and cost for me. I'm not a racer, so performance doesn't have the same focus for me than others. If your likes are more heavily on the performance side and you're ok with any price difference then an SRT is definately the right choice for you.

Don't disregard the 6.1, it's no slouch by any means. So if you want SRT at a "reasonable" cost.....

When I was in the market I looked at all the 8 cylinders, RT and SRT. I was drawn to the 6.1 because of the overall performance (not just HP) of the SRT over the RT, and I could get a 6.1 for about 10k less than any 392 available in my area at the time. But the closer was when I found a garage queen in the exact colour with a 6spd in it. I asked the wife what she thought and when she replied "It's f*king beautiful!" well .... SOLD. No regrets here.
