I'm looking to install an SRT exhaust manifold or possibly headers on my R/T this coming spring/summer. I currently have a Borla exhaust with high flow cats. I have a few questions about adding headers.

1 What kind of fit or finish issues did you have?
2 Any other mods required?
3 How easy/difficult was the install?
4 Was there a noticable performance improvement?

If you can answer all or any of the questions I would apperciate it

Thanks

I have the ceramic coated jba shortys on my R/T. I paid to have them done, with the headers you prolly want to fatten up your A/F ratio. And yes there was a noticeable difference in perf.

I just picked me up a set of 6.1 exhaust manifold and mids and plan to have them put on this wednesday. I'll be able to give you more of the details then. As for how hard to install I went by my local shop and he quoted me about 4/5 hours to get it all done. So its an extensive mod..

I'm curious to know tho for those that have done this mod was a tune necessary afterwards?? since their will be a noticeable improvement of air flow from the restrictive stock manifold. I'd like to maintain a nice A/F ratio and i'm sure ill be running a lil on the rich side afterwards. If so is this something the dealership can adjust for me or will I just have to take it in to a local performance shop and get the car dyno'd and dialed in.

So did your local shop mention anything about the EGR O2 sensor? From what I understand there is no port for the O2 sensor on the 6.1 SRT headers like there is on the 5.7 exhaust manifold and the SRT header has to be fitted with the EGR for the O2 sensor. Any feedback on this mod?

I got the JBA Shorties & done them myself. Be sure to put car on a lift. Some say that they have done it on their back on jack stands, but I don't see how. Unhook the battery especially when doing the passenger side. You will hit the starter & make sparks. On the passenger side, I think the middle bolt, you will need a special wrench to tighten. I took an end wrench & bent it into a semi circle to get to it. Nothing else would fit.
I already had the Predator & was in the process of a custom tune with DCX Depot. I sent them a datalog after the install & I'm sure that they adjusted the A/F ratio.

1 What kind of fit or finish issues did you have? None.
2 Any other mods required? Not Really
3 How easy/difficult was the install? Not really hard, just time consuming.
4 Was there a noticable performance improvement? Yes

Unfortunatelly no he didn't mention anything about that, although he told me he's done this swap before two other times to be specific, so I'm sure he knows if this is an issue and how to address it, I have an appointment set up wend morning and i'll be able to find out more information for you then if you'd like. I took a look at the SRT header and midpipe and it looks like the sensor is just repositioned futher down on the midpipe right before it bolts up it appears this way on both pipes.

Ya I'm interested in doing the SRT headers only....no midpipes as I already have the Borla Exhaust with HF Cats already installed. I think the R/T exhaust manifold has the EGR installed right on the manifold body. Let me know what you find out......Thanks

Well good news vchris

headers went on yesterday and everything went great fit was perfect everything lined up exact they reused my same gaskets for my 5.7 to the 6.1 heads. The only thing i need to get right now is a upstream and down stream 02 sensor and and extension for those. Other wise running just fine. My light is on now due to the 02 sensor being disconnect atm, but once i go pick up a extension and the new ones everything should be just fine.

No other mods were required. The install was like i said a 4/5 hour job and out of my hands so can't really say if it was difficult, but they said they had no problems with it.

As far as performance improvement, throttle response is INSTANT. There is no hesitation at all and its much smoother through all the gears. I haven't really gotten to take it WOT yet, but there is an improvement from what i've driven. The exhaust note didn't change too much its a little more throaty sounding slightly deeper tone than what i had before. :bigthumb:

So I finally found some SRT8 headers and midpipes. I've been on a couple other forums and discovered some other possible issues. I've decided to go ahead and install the SRT midpipes. From what I understand I'll need the 2 O2 sensor extensions, 6.1 bolts and gasket for the headers and possibly a 6.1 dipstick and tube. Anybody order this stuff and have part numbers?

I currently have a Borla catback exaust installed. Anything I should be aware of?

Anybody with experience doing this mod please feel free to chime in with any "issues" that might come up.

Hey Bud, The SRT8 headers and midpipes have been purchased but not delivered yet. I need to get some other parts delivered before I can start the install.....(6.1 bolts and 6.1 dipstick and tube, 5.7 gaskets and O2 extensions). Keep me updated with your progress BADHEMI.

BTW thanks to all who have responded. CT is a great forum.......:bigthumb:

well I got further than I thought i would tonight,it took about 2 hours to remove everything, including the exhaust manifolds..it was tight, but not as bad as i thought it was going to be...everything went well so far, tommorrow i will install the srt headers using my old gaskets and might even be done with it...i didn't try to test fit the headers yet so hopefully it will go as smooth as removal....

i had jba shorties installed, it took the guy two hours, he's a dodge tech. the only issue we had was the oil dip stick spacer, I had to grind it doun about 1/4 inch. other than that fit and finish was great! sounds and runs much smoother:) I just need to get a custom tune but can't seem to get my windows 7 laptop to recognize my diablosport:(

I had American Racing Headers installed on my r/t. Long tubes with high flow cat mids. I had a shop do it because I've heard plenty of do it yourself horror stories. Took about 5 hours to do. I have stock dual exhaust that has had the mufflers and resos removed. It has a mean idle and sounds like a drag car at WOT. I improved my 0-60 and got some top end out of it as well.

Yes, this was a very expensive mod but I think it was well worth it. I have NOT gotten a tune for this (other then a canned 91 octane Diablotune) and it is obvious power gain. I am holding off for a custom tune for later once I do some other major mods. Hopes this helps...
