There would be significant imbalance issues idling in 4-cyl mode. It would feel like the engine is mis-firing and most any customer wouldn't find that acceptable.
When the engine is turning at +2k rpm, the firing intervals (when MDS is engaged) occur frequently enough that you won't notice except for the exhaust sound change.
