i just washed my wifes new 2 month old chevy today...it was purchased in early Jan. and driven through salt all winter...its probably been through 6 car washes and today it was washed by hand for the first time...not a scratch or swirl anywhere and its a dark color

now my brand new IE had swirls everywhere w/ 10 miles on the odometer....the stripes were especially noticeable...i saw a DWB with 10 miles on it that was solid swirls...why is this? i thought they improved their painting process

how can a Chevy w/ 4,500 miles on it driven hard through winter be perfect still and a brand new $50k Dodge be full of swirls right from the factory????

My theory is these cars were so dirty & caked with salt/debris
that who ever washed them after the striping did not do a proper
job or use a micro fiber towel to dry them & proceeded to dry/buff
with dirt still on which is why you see the swirls in the stripes as well

I don't notice them as much on the white .

The orange peel though bleeds right through the stripes

That's why painted stripes would have been worth it
for say 1500-2K as a factory option with a nice wet sanding after
to smooth the paint

my car was 1 week old at the dealership and had alot of dirt on it...i doubt it was washed by the dealer....the stripes had more swirls than the paint.....its not horrible, but why is it there at all? the paint on a new car should be like glass

we just got rid of a dark red Toyota....it had swirls from about 5,000 miles on....our old Chevy Avalanche didnt have much swirling until about 30,000 miles.....im wondering if Chevy knows something about paint that the others dont?

the DWB one i looked at was fresh off the truck that day!...and was unwashed....tons of swirls and scuffs....it wasnt washed by anyone accept Dodge

does anyone have a DWB IE that didnt come w/swirls?

I told the dealer to not wash it or anything until I got there. They left everything on the car (decals, paper tags, baggies, even those little foam blocks on the doors), too.

It had no swirls at all. The only problem was a less than 1/16" bubble in the right side stripe and I rubbed that out with finger pressure.
Paint was perfect (build date was early FEB 2010).

Dealer prep. Some of them "polish" it with machine.....burns the clearcoat. I remember going to a dealer to look at a new Vette I was interested in in '04. Took one look at it in the sun & left....paint was totally swirled....burnt-in to clearcoat!

From what you described, I'd suspect that this happens at Ground Effects - where the IE / SRT stripes are installed. They would have to wash the car before the stripe install and then squeegee the stripes during installation...

Once those cars get striped, they probably don't washed until the PDI/pred at the dealer...since they're coming off the transporters with swirls, it sounds like it comes from the stripe/upfit facility with that issue.

im wondering what they did when the cars were sitting under 2' of snow before they transport them?

how do they brush the snow off to move them?

did they get rewashed before going on a train?
did someone use a dirty buffer?

since its on the stripes it had to be after ground effects

Crappy job cleaning the car at the factory or dealer due to snow I bet.

I actually saw a VW dealership using a broom to clean snow off their cars after a snow storm

Was at the dealer yesterday and noticed that the white IE in the showroom had the swirls you are talking about... Not bad, but they wanted 60k for it...lol

mine arent bad at all either...at the right angle i can see them...soon ill be seeing more 392's on the road...im gonna look them all over....either im wrong or some people cant see the swirls like i can....until its really bad it doesnt jump out at you unless your at the right angle...i was in charge of analyizing colors for the printing industry for years and can see slight imperfections that others look past...ive been able to see body work and repairs on cars that has suprised dealers...i can see right where they stopped the blend

the DWB one i saw originally was absolutely horrible....like what you'd expect after 3 years of car washes....it was at night and inside the vehicle prep area....lots of overhead lights shining down...maybe it made the swirls stand out...it was shockingly bad.

you have to look hard to see it on the white paint, but on the blue stripes its more noticible

Swirls

Hey everyone. Long time lurker, first time post. I happened to run across this thread when I was doing some research to see if the majority of Challengers come with the FISP or DISP (Factory-Installed Swirl Package or Dealer-Installed Swirl Package).

The reason I say this is that I've been saving up for a Challenger SRT-8 ever since I sold my '89 Corvette Convertible about 5 years ago and, just last week, I drove 2 and a half hours out to a dealer who had one with the exact options that I want only to find that the paint was in such horrible condition that I couldn't believe my eyes! (I'm not sure if we can post pictures here but I do have a few that you guys wouldn't believe!)
