EDIT: Sorry about the typo in the subject, can't change it now, it's a 392 obviously. :)

Peeps,

Being a new 392 owner, I figured I'd post my first impressions here that may help others thinking about pulling a trigger on a 392. Just got it this weekend, so was finally able to drive it wide open today and then let a friend drive it hard as I sat in the passenger seat which gave me additional information that I'll share.

First off, I've had powerful cars before, so it's not like this is my first fast car or I'm coming from a Mini-van. :)

My Impressions for a 5 Day Owner:

  • Quieter than I imagined. You can hear the exhaust but it's not intrusive. Kind of like a low growl all the time. Even when you hammer it, it doesn't scream. As this is my DD, it's perfect. Plus I can mod it (CAI, Flow masters, if I really want to hear it).
  • Rides more smoothly than I thought it would. I have a Core, with the non-adjustable shocks which are permanently set in sport mode, but even with that, ride is slightly firm, but very comfortable.
  • Great torque even at low RPM. In first gear, even with traction control on, when I hammer it, I go sideways a bit. Very impressive. Torque is much more useful down low and for DD as you don't need to wind the engine out to get it. For me torque is more useful than HP, again for a daily driver. This was particularly noticeable when I sat in the passengers seat and my friend hammered it. I was literally thrown back in my seat as I didn't have a steering wheel to which to hold.
  • Visibility is better than I thought. I test drove a Camaro SS and Jesus, Mary and Joseph, (Hey I'm Catholic, it's OK) it was hard to see out of. The Challenger is much better in this regard. Still a bit hard to see out of the rear window, but no real issues.
  • It's fairly roomy inside. I'm 6'2, 245lbs and I fit fine with good head room despite it having a sunroof. Backseats are fine as well. I sat back there and while my head touched, I could stay back there if needed.
  • The trunk is massive, plus the rear seats fold down. Took the 3 young kids to school this morning, and all 3 of their booster chairs fit in the trunk and I still had room. And no, I didn't make them ride in the trunk. :) (They're good kids...) :D
  • The car has massive street presence. The thing just oozes menace. Mine is all black, with black wheels and I watched people's reaction and it got a TON of stairs, nods, etc. Women grabbed their small children in concern. (Well...not exactly...but you get my point.) At a stop light people would be slowly creeping up on me looking at it reading the 392 on the fender.
  • While silly, and not my main reason for buying it, I feel supremely cool driving it. I'm talking like Fonzi, Kojack, Mel Gibson Road Warrior, understated, cool. Not flashy, look at me, Magnum PI, Night Rider, David Hasselhoff cool. (Wow, I've just dated myself.) :bigthumb: I suddenly have the urge to chew gun while driving it or having a lollipop. (Kojack)
  • It's actually surprising practical as a DD. 23+ MPG on the freeway and 475HP to boot, with a 19.5 gallon fuel tank. Have your cake and eat it to sort of vehicle.
  • Tires are skinner than I'd like...245 in the rear. I don't think any other 475HP car as such narrow tires and quite a few sub 400 HP cars are wider tires. Yes I can upgrade, but wish it came with 275's standard.
  • Love the remote start, probably the most fun/useful feature. It gets hot here in AZ, so starting it remotely and letting it run for 5 minutes cooling itself down is fantastic.
  • Fantastic brakes, on par with my AMG E55's.
  • My young kids love riding in it screaming, "More power Daddy, drop the Hammer Daddy!" As kids have no filter, it just shows the fun and joy this car can deliver.
  • Wife hates it, but see drives a Hyundai. She hates the 82 inch TV I bought a few years back so enough said there.
  • The front spoiler lip can catch on things so be very careful. I think it's only 3-4 inches to the ground from the spoiler so just be aware.
  • Love the cup holders in the engine bay. (Not sure they're actually cup holders, but check them out again once you pop the hood, 1 on each far side right above the radiator, looks cool. Mickey's Malt Liquor Tall Boy, feel the sting! :)
  • The engine is gorgeous. Pop the hood and just marvel at it. Aesthetically, Dodge did a super job with it and it looks magnificent. Not a ton of hoses and wires going everywhere, it's almost...elegant. My AMG motor (E55) and a similar look, very clean, very precise, very nice. They should have somebody sign it like an AMG.
To review, I wanted to have my cake and eat it to with this car and I've achieved that goal. It's powerful, practical, roomy, reliable, with incredible street presence, the most of any current car IMHO, safe (5 star crash rating) & comfortable. I'm a 45 year old Software Executive, with 3 young kids and it fits me like a glove.

Thanks for reading and any new owners, feel free to chime in as well.

PS. Two pics below the 392 is mine and I figured I'd post the Road Warrior/Mad Max car to give you a sense of comparison with the, "Authority/menace/presence" our cars give the street. It's not quite as foreboding as the Mad Max Car but some of the similarities are striking. :)

Great write up! I'm a new Challenger (Shaker) owner too and am also surprised with its performance and overjoyed to have it. About the wives hating the cars: Be glad. My wife also loves our Shaker and I never get to drive it because she's always wanting to drive it! ;)

Thanks folks, very happy to be part of this forum/community and look forward to learning and contributing over the next several years. For those of you in AZ we should definitely meet up sometime. I see in the other sections of the forums there is a Southwest region. Nothing urgent here, we're all busy people but figured I'd suggest it.

Thanks again!

Just to add to the whole, "Cool ride" thing...I was getting my bi-monthly haircut at Great Clips today (#2 on the sides, a bit off the top and square the back all for $13) :) and as I was pulling into to the parking space just in front of the shop a middle age lady with her young daughter, perhaps 10, said to me as I stepped out of my SRT8, "Nice car!" After I got my hair cut and was in line to pay, a gentlemen in the lobby waiting, presumably, for his hair cut said, "Nice car bro."

It's funny but I don't even have a, "Fancy" SRT8. It's pitch black with no stripes with the regular Core wheels. It's as plain as they make them which is what I was after.

The point to all of this is simply to show the shape and stance of the Challenger elicits positive emotional responses from all walks of life all of which is an additional benefit of owning a SRT8. To be clear, I did not purchase it for external approvals, I bought it as I figured I'd enjoy it as a daily driver, which I do.

Anyway, just sharing from a new owner's perspective.

Great minds think alike! :) I've already done some practice runs but with all the rain we've had here in AZ it wasn't really bee possible. Still, now with wider tires out back and a few other planned mods, this will be my next project. :) Don't think it will be as quick as my E55 but it will be interesting to see what she can do.

It's a great road, an arrow straight one mile asphalt ribbon that goes into a state park. They close the park at night so it's my own private drag strip basically and is about half a mile from my house. :D

Soon!

Just another anecdotal story, was gassing it up on Friday and a landscaper driving by with his truck and trailer yelled, "Nice Car, wanna race!?" He was joking of course and I yelled back laughing, "No thanks!"

Then literally 2 minutes later this guy just walked up on me, looking a bit sketch to be honest (this gas station was not in the best neighborhood ) and as I prepared to either to throw down (joking I suppose...but well... not really...) he asks, "Is that the Hellcat?" I said no of course as they're not out yet.

He then proceeds to pull up pictures of the Interior of the Hellcat on his iPhone that were studio quality, telling me about the gauges, the horsepower, etc. I literally started smiling as I spoke to him how nice the photos looked as it just goes to show you the appeal of the Challenger & of course the Hellcat.

I've owned 10+ cars in my life so far and no other car (and I've had some nice ones, among them an Mercedes AMG) that have garnered so much positive attention from people. Mom's, Dad's, landscapers, a homeless looking guy possibly fleeing a recent crime spree, etc.. :D And again my car is pitch black, nothing fancy (no stripes) and completely stock looking.

What's more interesting is the Challenger seems to appeal to all spectrum's of social economic classes which is very rare among cars as most tend to appeal to just a certain subset of the population.

It's almost uncomfortable in a humorous way I suppose as the reason I picked black was to have a bit of a, "Stealth" ride, but it's having the opposite effect actually!

I'm sure you all know this already, but as new Challenger owner, it's definitely a new & interesting dynamic with owning a Challenger.

I'm very close to having (buying) a black 2013 SRT 8 (or Tungsten/silver) if things go as planned so your little stories are making me anxious :)
NSF
Don't be anxious. :) These are all good interactions with people and it just shows the a Challenger, perhaps a black one more than other colors it seems, elicits positive responses from people.

So go for it, but just be prepared to have people say things (mostly positive as you've seen above) about your car when you least expect it. This will happen often if this is going to be your DD, trust me. :)

Thanks Alex but this will be a Garage queen for me. I'm retired and need a toy, sold my boats and old muscle cars, too much work so I thought I would like some modern muscle with comfort, reliability etc., probably wont see 1500 mi a year but I'll enjoy just detailing and looking at it if you know what I mean. Old age aint for ******* brother, believe me on that.
I've run into a stumbling block with the black one I wanted here locally, I don't want to pay sales tax and the dealer didn't like my bid which I thought was very fair, oh well. I'm got 2 others I'm trying to deal with but they are a long ways from me and that make sit difficult!!!!
One is on these forums for sale, Tungsten/Silver stripe 2012 low miles but commincation's are slow for some reason??

Well congrats then in advance sir and regarding the other forum, compared to this one which seems to have over 2,000 active posters at any given time, all other boards on the net will seem much, much slower. :)

I don't know how many members in total ChallengerTalk has but it's got to be quite a few.
