I don't have a 2015+ LX, so i don't even have the warning light you're talking about in my dash. But if i had to guess, I'd say that warning light is illuminated by what it believes is abnormal resistance in the stop/tail/turn circuit to which the bulb(s) in question connects.

If it were me, I would pull all bulbs on that circuit and reseat them to make sure it's not a corroded plug on one of them.

Then I would physically trace the wiring harness wires they plug into along the trunk lid and around the trunk area to make sure one of the wires hasn't rubbed off some insulation or been pinched somehow such that it would affect the circuit's resistance and trip any warnings of monitoring systems.

And if none of that yielded a clue or made any difference in stopping the light, i would just bite the bullet and take it into the dealership's service dep't and let them diagnose.

You might have to pay a hour or two worth of labor to get an answer as to what's causing it (or maybe not have to pay at all!), but just because they ID problem doesn't mean you have to pay them to fix it.

Once identified, if the problem were going to cost significantly more to fix, tell them to hold off on that, pay whatever labor you owe, and take it home. Then you can take your time figuring out who and how you want to go about fixing the root cause (or paying someone to fix it).

That'd be my approach, but YMMV obviously.

2015+ use all LEDs, there are no bulbs to reseat.

 

Pull it and check. If it's the same system as my Ram Truck had, there are two sets of wires going to the bulb. One drives it, the others "senses" it. Mine got corrosion on the "sense" side and kept giving me falses also. I just cleaned it up and that went away. Use dielectric grease on the sockets and bulbs to help prevent this type of thing.

 

Thanks for this tip. My Ram has a false brake light out alert periodically. I'll give this a try.

 

Could be relay is acting up...bad contacts. :scratchhead:

My 15 factory manual diagnostics table only show the clock spring, feed circuit and BCM as possible systems to check for problems. No mention of a relay nor is one shown on the fuse box but it is probably soldered on and not replaceable. Failing relays (fuel pump, lights...) on jeeps/dodge is nothing new and was common on the TPIM (fancy fuse box with integrated relays). Although that was up to 2014...not sure about the +15s.

 

Did this ever get resolved? Mine just started the same thing.

 

Same here. The warning indicator came on almost three weeks ago and would sound/appear each time I let off the brake, but I just haven't had time to bring it in to the dealership. I also checked and found all the parking/headlight/tail light/signal light/brake light bulbs working. Yesterday it miraculously stopped.

 

I apologize for the extremely late response. NO, this has not been fixed.

I called a friend of mine who is a dealer tech. He told me to swap the tail lights over from left to right and see if the error would shift to the opposite side. It did. After I swapped them, the dash said the RIGHT tail light was out. So. I ordered a used tail light off of ebay. I got it installed. worked normally for half a day, then went back to doing it again. The difference now is that I don't get that dadgum dash ding every time I touch the brake pedal. Now it just dings and shows the alert at startup and then fast-flashes on the left side. Its possible I got ANOTHER messed up tail light.... but the wife said the flash speed didnt bother her. That dinging did, and its gone. So. Band-aid fix for us.... but not fully repaired.

Oh, and to confirm. This is on our 2015 Challenger. Despite my profile photo... that was our FIRST Challenger, which was a 2010. The '15 is all LED.

If there is a problem with the taillight assembly’s design/construction, then yes it is possible you got another messed up one. However, if the taillight assemblies had an inherent problem, you wouldn’t be the only one experiencing it. So if you cannot find other instances of similar behavior in the Challenger population at large, there’s probably not an issue with the assemblies. Beyond that, you’re probably going to have to punt and take it to the dealership to diagnose.

 

mine has been doing it for over a year now and suddenly stopped but stopped for only a couple weeks.i just live with it.

 

It shows left rear, but that is just a generic icon, could be the other side or the top mounted Brake light

 

I just bought a used 2016 R/T plus that has the same issue. It says the passenger rear tail light is out but it's working. I'm going to try a new tail light and see if that fixes it.

 

Had the same thing happen with my 2015 SXT. Dealer Challenger expert told me via email that they have seen this and the only fix is to replace the tail lamp assembly.
I took it for yearly safety inspection and the inspector passed it but really examined the light really really closely and you could see one LED strip was out. (you really had to look hard to see it but he was right).
Replaced the light with a new one off ebay for $186 and the problem has so far gone away after the swap.

 

My 2015 challenger is also doing the same thing. Dealership changed entire unit for a new one and cannot figure out why the turn signal error keeps coming back on.

The test that the system uses to determine whether or not to display the error message is likely a simple resistance one - under the limit, no message; over the limit, display error message.

So if the message is coming up but the light in question is working, checking the resistance of the wiring harness at each junction along the light’s wiring path would be my approach for diagnosing.

At some point there should be a resistance value out of line with the rest, and that’s the section of wiring harness to zero in on. Loose connection, corroded connection, stripped insulation, anything could be the culprit likely.

Although ideally this is the sort of task the techs at the dealership would perform when it’s taken in for the problem, but it’s not a fun task by any means I’m sure, and so few techs will want to do it I’m guessing. It’s much easier to just say, “I don’t know what’s up, can’t find anything wrong” and send the customer on their way.

If they never really look, they aren’t lying when they say they couldn’t find it...

 

Check all lights, side markers as well. Put on the 4 ways and compare sides while they are all flashing.

 

My Ram is currently doing this. It’s not a false code with my issues. It’s actually my drivers middle brake light when applied. The running lights work. I found a loose wire into the plug adapter. The first time I had this happen I had to take it apart and recrimp the wire connector and slide it back into the adapter and apply die electric grease. Crappy design. Had issues with my another Ram I owned.

 

What do you mean by the fuses weren't popped but melted?

As mentioned, none of the exterior lights are serviceable.

The lamp assemblies have a voltage sense circuit which can trip if there is a bad connection.

And when it comes to diagnosing, service manuals are not very helpful.

Yes i also have 2015 challenger sxt and i am facing the same issue. I have no idea how to fix this thing even though my lights are working good.

 

2016 Challenger with the same problem

 

So I’ve been getting this for about a year now. All lights work. Brake lights, turn signal etc. all work fine but I keep getting this error. I finally ordered the right tail light where in indicator is saying is out. It just came in, I installed, pulled the battery power (to reset) and tried it. Well guess what?
It’s still doing the same thing. Does anyone have any idea what it might be? Again, all lights work fine.

 

Check for codes. I find Alfaobd or DiagFCA software do a good job finding codes that are not related to the powertrain.

I did not read every response but when this started happening on my RAM the bulb was good. The circuit looks for a certain Resistance? not sure if that is correct but I would have to remove and clean the bulb base/socket and it would be fine again for quite a while

PS one time when it did it even though everything was working I changed the bulb and all was good again.
