Traded ZF-A8 for 6 speed manual

Hello guys, I just wanted to share a recent compulsive trade I did last week. I had a 2021 RT auto (3 years exactly) and while “playing with car value and stuff like that in CarMax I noticed the car had a “decent” value for a trade in. I ended up finding a 3K miles 2022 6 speed manual transmission with a few more equipment than mine and ended up trading in the A8. I felt some guilt for buying the auto in the first place as I initially tested a manual that someone got before I could finish my trade in back in 2021. I was kind of bored with the auto and was considering the tuning route (removing the MDS mostly), but after finding the manual, doing the numbers $$, I decided to jump in and get the manual. I can now first hand experience confirm the “A8 are faster and all that”, however the manual does feel good, bring memories from first cars I had, removed the MDS (no tuning needed), and it just feels different. I guess I’ll be part of the Barton family and all that eventually.
Also, knowing that the manual transmission will eventually die and be like a phone booth in the future I guess makes it “some kind” of different.

Been looking at this one recently a bit as well, but the only bad part about the M6 is I can’t have any adult beverages if we go out to eat, as the wife hasn’t mastered a manual transmission well.

No way! The 100th cars had one of the best interior put in our cars! Aaaaaaand the pistol grip is the best too. You’re in good shape my friend! This coming from a guy who’s owned 10 Challengers from 2013-2023 (manuals and autos) including two Hellcats.

As far as straight line acceleration, automatics have pretty much always been faster.

As far as road racing, it wasn’t until fairly recent history that automatics got respectable.

The ZF is a top-notch trans, but my car is a 2010. I don’t think the old 5-speed would stand much chance against a manual car on a road track.

That’s cute, except a torque converter equipped automatic transmission actually multiplies torque

Come out tmrw nite

Bring a jacket

And a helmet

Oh yeah, your car has a manual… prolly won’t be quick enough to necessitate either of those items : )
The ZF is so damn impressive. When driving a Hellcat in track mode, it slams you so hard at WOT that your head literally snaps. I enjoy driving manual muscle cars but there is no denying the precision and performance of modern automatics.

Everyone knows by now that an automatic is a few fractions of a second quicker than a manual transmission in a racing environment where you're against the timer. They're faster than the human body at changing gears reliably and repeatedly. This has been the case since the mid-60's TorqueFlites came out. That dead horse has been well beaten.

However, very few people actively race these cars, so it's a moot point. For my part, I don't give a single rip about that imperceptible difference in day-to-day driving. It's all about the driving experience for me. Being connected to the car. Being engaged in the act of driving. Feeling the mechanical presence of the machine. It's just cool. I get enough automatic exposure on my frequent rental car experiences. There's nothing at all wrong with them, but it's just not as pleasurable a driving experience. For me anyway.

If you want to compete in timed acceleration trials, get the automatic; I would if I wished to race competitively. But if you want to have a cool experience, get the manual. I've never once regretted it.

To each, their own.

Cheers!

I don’t think that this has become a manual vs. auto debate (again). At least that wasn’t the point of my posts. My point was that while the older autos may have been faster than manuals too, the ZF is even faster and is a pleasurable driving experience as well. It doesn’t have just be for racing applications. I love manuals in muscle cars, my Mustang has one. If I was going to buy a Scat Pack, I’d get another M6 car. A Hellcat or Demon on their other hand is a completely different conversation when it comes to the ZF automatic transmission. You can’t even get a Demon with a manual and the HC manuals have had durability issues. The ZF is amazing in a high horsepower car and it’s fun too!

I drive back roads. My M6 Scat is more than enough. I like the physical connection of the M6 to the driving experience.

For me on my roads, the M6 is basically a 4-speed with 2 extra very rarely used gears.

What I do not do is "row down the avenue" in rush-hour traffic. If I still had to deal with that crud a lot, I would prefer an automatic.

If anyone is looking for a new R/T with a manual, the local Dodge dealer here in Knoxville has 5 new Challengers with the 6 speed.
