Hello. Is it ok to trickle charge the battery while it is still hooked up to the car with both positive and negative terminals?

There are a few purists who say a tender should be attached to the battery directly; underhood connection means the SOC (State Of Charge) shunt on the negative battery terminal sits between the maintainer and the battery.

I'll note a difference here between a battery maintainer and a charger. A maintainer is designed or at least intended to maintain the battery in storage, a charger is intended to add power to a discharged battery.

I have a small charger (had it for decades), typically will do 4 amps on a mildly on-the-edge battery which needs a boost to start a vehicle; it may need hours to a day to do its job, gentle on the battery but do not leave it hooked up longer than needed. I also have a battery maintainer for winter storage (link below). I hook it up under the hood. Either consider me not a purist or someone who does not want to create an air leak in the trunk weatherstripping with the wiring.

A maintainer can charge an on-the-edge battery in theory but it might take a day or three. It is not a charger.

Final note: There were some chinesium forgeries on Amazon during CoViD. I bought from O'reilly as it seemed to be authentic product. Some buyers on Amazon reported getting very light product, it should feel like there is some dense parts in it.

I have a maintainer on my car constantly if it’s not being used. My car only goes out once or twice a year for a couple of hours, the original battery lasted 12 1/2 years. I’d never think that was possible. My other collector car and my 3 motorcycles also are plugged in to their own units.
