When they first started making/using TPMS, a goal was to keep them as light as possible. A lot of factory ones were made with all metal parts being aluminum. (My 2002 Chrysler Town and Country Limited had them)
The stem, the core, the cap, were all aluminum. HUGE problems if you ran without a cap, the core would corrode (even with a cap) and you couldn't unscrew it out. Now, they all seem to be brass again, I guess realizing what a blunder that was.
But the idea of looking for the silvery cap must have stuck, so the new plastic caps were molded in silvery plastic.
But yeah, use any cap you want, just USE A CAP!
And also the actual valve has nothing to do with the TPMS sensor, other than using it as a mounting point. They have their own internal opening to measure the pressure inside the wheel.
The issue is, if you bugger up the valve, and need to replace it, the sensor is attached, and part of the sacrifice. Back when they were expensive, I remounted a sensor to a mag-wheel type valve, to save the sensor when only the valve needed replaced. It lasted 4 more years.
