Scat Pack: Hot and Cold

Today. After nearly 30 minutes of nearly constant running mainly driving in town. Nothing crazy. Streets very cold -- notice outside temperature of 12F! -- of course and didn't want to press my luck on summer tires. These Scat Packs appear to run the oil hot. No pic but just a couple of miles on the freeway at 70mph coolant temperature got down to 199F. But it climbed once back on surface streets. Oil temperature got down to 212F. But of course it climbed too.

Those tires will crack in extreme cold, they get
brittle, not just squirrelly.
When I replaced mine I bought very good and expensive tires but not summer only tires.
I’d think after your recent event you’d park it and not tempt fate.

Those are pretty much the same numbers I see in my 2015 SRT 392.

Except ... living in Northeast Florida I've never seen 12-degrees for an outside temperature since I've owned this car. :)

I'm guessing that you were idling to see the Oil Pressure at 38psi.

You mentioned you live in NE Florida. I live in Jacksonville

I always thought Temps seemed high too (I think I remember seeing 260+?) but I also never had a digital readout to actually compare anything else to, much less a performance car. On the flip side it's also the only thing I've had with an external oil cooler (I think) which further confuses me. Not concerned tho, if something truly is wrong that's what the warranty is for.

You have a Hellcat and a Scat Pack? Interesting. I would very much like to get your subjective comparison. Strengths vs weaknesses. Likes vs dislikes (if any). Applications etc.

Briefly, it boils down to the Scat Pack is a more balanced car than the Hellcat. The Hellcat's got muscle to spare but not much else. It got to the point I really wasn't enjoying the car as much as I should have given what it cost.

The SP feels more sporty and is more fun to drive especially on roads with curves which abound here in Benton County AR.

Also, the Hellcat is a complex car with the supercharger, its drive, the intake charge cooling system, A8, and uConnect radio stuff. Had the NAV go out last July. Took hours at the dealer -- two different times -- for the radio to be confirmed bad and 2 different software updates tried. Neither one helped. Then a 3rd visit to get the radio replaced. Yes, under warranty but that was July last year. Hellcat is out of warranty IIRC the 17th of this month. Just decided I didn't want to own a complex car out of warranty.

Really enjoying the Scat Pack. Or was. Was in the shop for several weeks getting some body damage fixed after being hit -- it was parked -- by somebody pulling out of the parking space next to it.

Car repaired. Damage total came to $8007. I picked the car up around 6pm Friday Feb. 5. Drove it 20+ miles home. Weather has been so bad I have only driven it twice since then. The other day it was in 12F cold.

A pic taken yesterday (IIRC):

Currently it is 0F with a wind chill of -17F and snow forecast for today. Probably not even taking my van out. Might walk to the mail box and pick up mail later today. Round trip is probably 200ft.

@Rockster ... Stay in the warm house. No mail delivery today because it's Presidents Day.

BTW ... I commented on the oil PSI only as a sly compliment to you for having the sense to wait until you were idling to take pictures of your gauges.

@SKT PK 9 Man ... A while back (at least a year) a letter-to-the-editor in Car & Driver commented that most of the magazine's complaints about the Challenger Hellcat in a Mustang, Camaro, Challenger comparison would be solved if they had used a Challenger Scat Pack Wide Body. The editor acknowledged that it might be a case when less actually is more.

I guess I’ll add my data to this discussion. I have a 2019 Challenger 1320 stock with just under 11k miles largely driven in South Florida. I drive it for fun once or twice a week on a ~50mi trip with urban, suburban and hwy miles along the way all year around. Outside temperatures have varied roughly from 63F to 93F and seem to have virtually no effect on operating temps.

The most common temps are coolant: 201F to 205F, oil: 222F to 226F, trans oil: 197F while driving around in Drag mode. The hottest I usually see, with much WOT fun, are about 213, 238, and 205 respectively. I tend to give things a “rest” when I see these temperatures.

I often use Normal mode with the MDS in the last few miles and get sometimes reduced oil temps of 217F or 219F.
