What about the trailer park way to get better exhaust sound?

You know- if you are hesitant to start switching up exhaust parts, what effect does the ole punch a screwdriver hole in the stock muffler have? Is it possible it could sound pretty darn good for $0 parts & labor compared to taking a leap on an aftermarket part that may or may not have the sound you were expecting?

Just for argument's sake, would you think there be a difference if you hole-punched the mid-muffler or the rear-resonator. Would the sound be better one way over the other, you think?

For those of you who plan to install new parts anyway, would you be interested in trying the hole-punch experiment while your original parts are in place and reporting back?

Before I installed Blastin' Bobs, I used a 2 1/4" hole saw and an extension to drill into the baffles of the rear resonators in thru the chrome tips..ie really big screwdriver. I could not notice any difference in the sound that was worth mentioning. Now I have the rumble I was looking for and still quiet cruising.

Guys do this with motorcycles too. It's a cheap way (attempt) to get a little more sound while keeping what appears to be stock exhaust. Haven't heard one of these "modified" mufflers that sound good.

Interesting and novel approach! I had not anticipated going in that particular "entry", but interesting you tried it out.

My curiosity was more along the lines of what happens if you make openings in the actual exterior case of either the mid or rear components...

If you eliminate the muffler, then you got drone with the resonators having nothing to work against. So how is that not an equally poor idea? If you are suggesting cut-outs, how do you know that is the sound I would be looking for, in the first place?

Drilling a hole seems like just as good an idea if you just want a "little" more sound, but are not opposed to keep the overall nature of stock intact. Seems like a coin toss to get that if you replace it with a different muffler, altogether. If want a significantly different sound, then most certainly you should go right to swapping parts.

I'm just curious if people have tried it.

I replaced the muffler with a magnaflow performance one and removed the resonator and well it sounds awsome!

I did this on an old car of mine. It actually sounds pretty bad because all of the sound resonates underneath the car. Making it louder in the car than even behind the car.

It's actually quieter and more pleasant to just go to your local muffler shop and have the muffler just removed and replaced by piping. Should cost like $30. More if you want a shiny exhaust tip.

trailer park way would be the long screw driver thru the back pipe....i am well versed in trailer park engineering and none of my Bud drinking chain smoking friends of mine would drill a muffler....but would probably cut the after the muffler pipe and "dump" it under the car

The old muscle cars of the 60s with true duals rusted out the mufflers every 2 years and the pipes every 4 years. Didn't sound good either.

So I would not recommend it.

My question would be. Why not go on youtube and watch a video on it. Because if you are asking about it that means someone has a video. If any thing go get glass pac's or a cherry bomb.

Revisionist History

When I was much, much younger, I was catching a ride from my brother to somewhere I didn't want to walk, and he ended up having one of his meltdowns he was famous for and smashing a hole in the windshield of his truck while I looked on in horror. I remember sitting there, frozen, unsure what to do. I just couldn't understand why he would get upset about something so badly he would punch a hole through his own vehicle's windshield.

I can see now that I was just misinformed. He was merely wanting to get a new windshield but figured he'd try out the old one with a hole in it for a while before he got the new one. How silly of me to not have seen that until now.

Thank you for showing me the light, so to speak. And yes, I am going to apologize to my brother for having such a jaded opinion of him all these years. Though I'm not sure yet if I will apologize in a letter or just wait until we go upstate to visit him again and do it in person...well, as "in person" as you can be with bulllet proof glass separating you that is.

I think u should take ur own advice and do this trailer trash idea to ur own car instead of asking others to do it; after all it won't cost u a thing $0!!!

It'll prolly sound like a clunker with an exhaust leak in the car. Besides how is anyone supposed to know what exhaust note ur lookin for. Do ur research and take the plunge like everyone else has including myself. Super 10s reso delete, minimal drone on HWY.
