I took my Shaker to the dealer yesterday for the third time. They have already replaced the alternator twice in the past month and I still have the problem. They couldn't find anything wrong, and told me I must need the new alternator for the recall, which they are expediting for me. They said they would notify me as soon as it came in, but as I was leaving, my ABS and anti-skid lights came on and the brake light started flashing. Also, my A/C quit. I immediately pulled back around to show the service writer, and found out that I couldn't turn the engine off. Then the radio quit. They gave me a loaner to get me home, and my Shaker is there hopefully to be repaired completely this time. When I got home, I found the recall notice waiting for me in the mail. :eek2:

Got my recall for my 2014 RT. I did have a weird electrical problem. I kept blowing the same fuse for the steering wheel control. Dealer never found a problem but after several hours they reconnected one of the many wire harnesses and it stopped . It's been about 4 weeks now and has not returned but I can't help but wonder if there is a connection. They told me a pin in the connector must have been loose and reconnecting it fixed it. Tough to swallow the 500 dollar diagnostic fee. And of course not covered under extended warranty. Last time I buy one.

An extended warranty just extends the time the dealer has to tell you "that's not covered". Dealership folks remind me of Wyle E. Coyote... :nerd:

I have a 2012 challenger rt garage queen and my gf has a 12 charger sxt awd. She is a victim. Car died on the parkway in rush hour. I was hoping it was a dead battery. Brought a new one out to her, installed it and there was smoke billowing out of the alternator. Had it towed to the dealer only for them to deny us a loaner than asked us if we wanted them to install another faulty alternator for $1000. Called fca consumer line many many many times to no avail. If i hadnt disconnected the battery it would have caught on fire. They only offered us under book value to buy it and when I asked why they said because it has an open unfixable recall. Fca authorized a rental reimbursement but didn't say how long for. And it is unsafe to drive until the proper part is available. Heads up to everyone out there that if your car dies because of this recall and causes an accident your insurance will NOT cover it. Make sure to call the nhtsa and report this unsafe situation. Hopefully people don't have to start losing their lives for loaner cars to be offered at no cost or buy back the cars at fair market value.

I'm sorry to hear about your wife's car..... My '14 R/T has been sitting in my garage since I found out about this recall, which was 2 weeks before I received an official recall notice from FCA in the mail late August. I've been driving my '07 Grand Cherokee (the last year they were built by Mercedes-Benz) as my DD waiting for the Challenger's recall part to become available at the dealership. Night and day quality difference between my Mercedes-Benz Jeep and my Fiat Dodge !! I love my Challenger and hope to drive it for many years but I'll never buy another FCA vehicle.... :| Did I say "never" ?? good, because that's what I meant.... "NEVER". And please, "Dodge Customer I Don't Care" rep...., don't waste your time sending me the "I feel your pain but there's not a thing I can do to help you" email. It's insulting. Shockwav86, I just want to say again that I'm sorry about your wife's Charger. Rant over...., Have A Fine Navy Day everyone. :frown:

#51 ·
If you are "NEVER" going to buy a Dodge product due to a simple recall, I believe that you will NEVER buy ANY car ever again. Every manufacturer out there ends up with a recall on their products. And Fiat didn't take over Dodge until 2015. Your 2014 has the Mercedes Benz parts in it.

#52 ·
Didn't say Dodge product...., I said Fiat..., and you know I'm just venting because I want to drive my Challenger but I'm afraid. Also, I thought Mercedes sold Chrysler at the end of the '07 model year, or so I thought. Who owned it between 2007 and 2015 ? :|

#56 ·
When you try and follow the timeline of who owned what when.....you'll go nuts. We throw the name Mercedes around and it was Daimler who partnered with Chrysler years ago. When I bought my 2014 RT Plus, the parts guy said that Daimler still had a 20% stake in Chrysler. He said that there were still many Daimler parts in the cars but it would be changing once Fiat took over in 2015. I have the Lifetime Warranty on my car and will keep driving it until the parts are available. My brand new 2016 Chevy Cruze already had a recall for 3rd brake light gasket leak, fuel pump power control module and replaced the fuse block. 2012 Chevy Suburban never had any recalls. 2003 Saturn had recall for ignition module. It takes alot for them to announce a recall. Costs them millions. The Takata airbag recall will most likely bankrupt the company. Remember when Firestone tires had a huge recall, but they survived. I never buy a car when it is the first year of a new design. Too many things to go wrong with new designs.

Mistakes happen all the time, that's life. I get it. But when there is no fix and no customer service in the meanwhile, it leaves a terrible taste in my mouth. If you make a mistake, own it and make it right.

I was told they will be new parts. Fyi, I was driving on a short drive the other day and my battery light came on. Then, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. I shut the car off and restarted it and the lights went out. I'm sure this is part of the recall problem. The diodes are overheated and that's what happens. Also, my alternator is making a lot of noise. I hope they come up with the parts soon.

Not good, so far I've had no problems related to this, knock on wood. I wonder what 3rd party parts houses have available.

The service writer at my dealership called this morning. He told me that the current eta for the alternators is July of 2018.

My Shaker has been at the dealership for almost 5 weeks now waiting for the upgraded alternator. It's not drivable any more, and they've already installed two new, pre-recall alternators in it. :icon_eek:

I will guarantee you that the problem is not the alternator, think about how many other Challengers that are still on the road with pre recall alternators. Ask them this question "find another Challenger on the lot that runs perfectly with a pre recall alternator and swap the alternator over to your car, what's going to happen?

i filed the paperwork with FCA in mid-September. I got a call from them last week. They are reimbursing me for both the alternator AND th battery it ate. Happy to hear that. I expected to have to argue about the battery. The person I talked to indicated sometime in Feb. 2018 for replacement units.

My 2011 RT has been running fine since the alternator died in Dec. 2014. Vehicles from 2011 through 2014 were affected so I probably got an older version for the replacement unit (part number: 4801855AB is listed on the repair order).

Dealing with the alternator recall has been a complete nightmare due to the lack of competence by Dodge Customer Care and dealership network. My RHR 740 Nav system died this summer at 20k miles so I had my charging system tested at O'Rilley Auto Parts. It turns out the alternator voltage regulator failed and fried out my radio. Since they didn't have the replacement part for the alternator yet, the replaced it with the existing model. Dodge forced me pay $600 out of pocket and file a reimbursement claim. This normally wouldn't be an issue but the complete incompetence by Dodge Care led me me to make about 12 phone calls over 60 days to them to to process the claim and cut the check.

Dodge is paying to replace the radio but made me get a $90 "diagnostic test" done on it at the dealer before they would cover it. They refused to reimburse me the $90 or pay for any labor associated with my claim. It's now February and the Radio finally came in. The service adviser told me I could swing in and pick it up (I'm going to install it to save $). I had planned on swapping the hard drive to retain my songs but when I arrived they told me they needed the old unit and were confused why the adviser did not tell me that. On Saturday I made a 2nd trip to the dealer with the dead radio, they opened the box from Dodge and inside was a replacement LCD display, not a complete unit! What a waste of time, I now have to go back on my 5th dealer visit to take care of the crap from this whole ordeal and I'll have to go in again in the spring to get the new alternator installed...

I don't have any plans of selling my Challenger, but Dodge Care sucks and I will probably never purchase a new $40,000 Dodge again.

I'm really hoping this alternator recall fixes my issues once and for all... When I first bought my 2011 R/T Classic, the alternator failed driving off the lot and had to be replaced on Day 1 of owning the car. 3 Months later, the alternator failed again, but this time I was going 85mph on the freeway. My dash lights lit up like a christmas tree, speedometer started moving sporadically up and down, and my power steering cut off. Paid to have the alternator and battery replaced because both were completely dead by the time I got to the stealership. I submitted a reimbursement claim after this recall was announced for the alternator and battery that I had to pay for out of pocket. It was approved and I received the reimbursement. This morning when I got into my car, I saw the same flickering dashboard lights including ABS, Trac Control, BRAKE and a few others and the speedometer did the sporadic movement again. Looks like my alternator is failing... for the 3rd time in 2 years. Hopefully this recall replacement that I will be requesting on Monday will be the last one.

Sounds like you have bigger issues than just an alternator. I haven't replaced my alternator yet, just received a letter regarding the recall yesterday. My car has been storage and I have been giving them time to get a supply . It also mentioned that its affecting cars with the electronic power steering. Not sure when the first year had it installed.

#82 ·
Not sure what the first year that had electronic power steering was, but mine has it. The lights dim and flicker every time I turn the wheel because the power draw is too much for the alternator (im guessing...)

My car is going in for the alternator recall and an oil change tomorrow. They also sent me an email saying that while my car is there, they will be going over it and making me an offer to buy or trade it in for a new car. The answer is "NO" unless they are willing to give me a Hell Cat for next to nothing. Another big NorEaster is coming, they better be finished before the snow starts.:crying:

#88 ·
I see a snow hostage situation coming!

"Buy a new car".

"No".

"Oh look, it won't be ready before the snow hits, darn"

A Guy :)

As stated in a previous post, FCA covered my battery. Last September (2017), I spoke to "Precious" in the recall group and asked about the battery. She said she would submit the claim, including the battery. My alternator died in December 2014 (vehicle is a 2011 RT with about 47k miles). It ate the battery also. FCA reimbursed me for the entire repair except for about $50 in California sales taxes.

Since this recall includes the 2014's and it happened near the beginning of the model year, did I get an old version alternator or the updated version? The replacement part number, from the work order) is 4801866AB.
can anyone tell me if this is an updated alternator? I've had no electrical problems since hten.

4801866AB is not the updated alternator

From a related thread...

sorry wrong, inspection first

If the part number on the part number tag is xxxxx-0801, xxxxxx-7021,
xxxxxxx-7041, xxxxxxx-7042, xxxxxxxx-7051, or xxxxxx-7052, no further action is
required. Close hood and return the vehicle to the customer.

If the part number on the part number tag is not xxxxxxx-0801, xxxxxxx-7021,
xxxxxx-7041, xxxxxxx-7042, xxxxxxx-7051, or xxxxxxx-7052, replace the
alternator assembly. Continue with Section B. (LD, LX Models with 3.6L
Engine), Section C. (LC, LD, LX Models with 5.7L Engine) or Section D.
(WD, WK Models with 3.6L Engine).

Where did you get it from. I'm also thinking of doing it myself to avoid the hassle of the dealership. I was also wondering if the new improved diode board was available and just replace that.

Are you the guy that lives in Yardley boro?

#97 ·
Just had mine replaced at the dealer. CSZET361AA is the replacement part number listed on the invoice.

Forgive me if I don't trust my car to alert me before the alternator fails. The recall notice specifically states that alternator failure can cause then engine to stop. My car couldn't even detect that the mechanic failed to connect the electric fan after a collision repair, and threw no alerts that the car was overheating, until AFTER the coolant had boiled, leaving an air-bubble I could not get out (on the road-side) and I had to be towed to a garage that could "burp" the system. I've got no faith in the self diagnostics.

#108 ·
the picture i quoted looks like a new alternator, and thats not the recall part number, also, dealers cannot sell recall parts, there is no way legally to buy them, and if a dealer sells recalls parts they can get in pretty serious trouble
Luke

ps would recommend you find a reputable dealer in your area and have the recall performed properly, not every dealer is bad, just like not all restaurants are bad

#109 ·
Luke,

I have a great dealer, Carson City Dodge. With me it's just the time, 2 hour round trip, 2+ hours sitting in waiting room, etc. Its just time = money and its a wash if I spend $200.00 and do it myself.

I have been researching aftermarket replacements, not sure yet how they compare with improved internals. But then, alternator technology has been around for decades and having a factory issue like this is well, really ??? :)
