2022 Weight, why so heavy?

What's making these cars come in with so much weight? Looking at the older Challengers the weight is about 900 pounds lighter than the 2021/22's. This thing weighs slightly more than my 2003 F150!

Mostly steel suspension and chassis, iron block V8, not much effort in weight reduction. You could say it's a true muscle car approach.

The Challenger also has pretty decent sound deadening for what it is. Makes for great cruisers.

Less use of high strength steel . Less aluminum, and less fancy high tech light weight materials. These LX cars are based on an old Mercedes Benz platform from the late 1990s, when Benz owned Chrysler.

Charger/Challenger/Magnum/300 = Benz E Class
Jeep GC/Durango = Benz M Class

Doesn't sound right to me either. Certainly not 'apples to apples'.

Edmunds shows a 2021 R/T at 4,182 pounds and a 2009 R/T at 4,081 pounds.

If talking about the 1st generation back in 1970, that's a moot point.

Prior to my 1st Scat Pack back in Dec. 2017 with my previous cars I used to weigh them at an ice plant -- that weighed passenger vehicles for a nominal fee on Saturday -- or at a convenient big rig scale at a truck stop. I was always careful to arrange to do this during a slack time. A bit of a problem is the damn speaker/mic one uses to communicate with the scale operator in the station is located way up in the air -- at big rig driver height of course -- and often it was with hand signals I was able to get the car weighed. This after I first talked to the station employee who ran the scale to ask if I could get the car weighed then how to go about it.

But since my 1st Scat Pack, MINI JCW, Hellcat, and now with my M-B cargo van and my 2020 Scat Pack the weights supplied by the factory are close enough for me. The biggest difference will come from me being in the vehicle while of course the factory weights are sans any one in the car.

To get a quick idea of the actual weight of any vehicle by subtracting the maximum combined weight of occupants and cargo on the Tire and Loading Information label in the door jamb from the GVWR found on the door VIN sticker.

So on this one we have 865 lbs subtracted from a 5,100 GVWR for a vehicle weight of 4,235 lbs to give you an idea.

So a loaded 392 weighs less than 4,200 lbs.

I hear Mustang and Camaro guys all the time talk about how ridiculously heavy these cars are. I think it's funny. There's only a 300 lb. difference, and that 300 lbs. gives you WAYYYY more car with the Dodge.

There was a meme of an '06 Shelby GT 500 around when they first came out with a great punch line. Something like "Shelby GT 500, just under 4,000 pounds". The weight difference between a Challenger and either sports car from Ford or Chevy is probably overstated, but like was said above, you get something worthwhile for the extra weight. More room, comfort, and style, in short the Challenger is an easy car to live with instead of being just a track focused sports car.

I had to drill holes in the sub frame after painting my calipers to offset the weight gain of the paint

I know this is an old thread, but just thought I would comment. This was a question that I had. I compared the weights of most of the old muscle cars and the average is roughly 3063 pounds. I had come up with my own theory as to the increase and I agree with the Benz E frame and sound deadening as the main cause. Also, electric windows, air bags, wiring for all conveniences, etc. all add up.

I had wanted a Challenger for years and when the last model year was announced I tried to order a new 2023 this last March. I was too late, as there were no more allocations if ordering a Wide Body Scat Pack Shaker. Long story short, the only car that came close to my desired build was a 2022 setting on a lot in St. Louis. Drove the four hours to St. Louis, test drove it before signing the papers and knew it was the right choice. What a great car. These Challengers are the best cruiser with REAL Performance. Additionally, if I drive the speed limit on Secondary Highways (55mph) and set the cruise control, I am seeing 27 and 28mpg. I have a heavy foot and if I can keep my wife from behind the wheel, my average MPG sets at 20mpg +/- 1mpg. Love this car!

True, the weight goes back to the Mercedes Benz era, and we can say the same thing about the Durango (Benz M Class). And these were old Benz platforms that goes back 20+ years where manufactures actually try to build better cars, each year and each generation. Need to car to be stronger? More metal, not more glue and or rat fur carpet for NVH. Not knocking new cars, just appreciating cars from the (recent) past. And era that's gone in a world of cost cutting.

Part of me wants to get a 2024 Dodge Durango. There are plenty of better options that are more modern. Maybe I like it Old School. The new definition of old school .

Its all plastic and fiber glass. That is one of the things I like about the challenger, its one of, if not the only "old school" car out there today. For me (25 year old) its the closest thing to a true American Muscle car on the market.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm "thinking" about. V6 Durango GT with 20" wheels. Not to get into the EV debate, but just been thinking about what's my last ICE vehicle. If I had to choose one, to do it all, it would be Durango. With new, it may last 15+ years. Dare I say 20 years since I don't drive much as I used to.

One may ask "why?"

3.6 V6 is not DI or Turbo. RWD. SUV. Seats 7. Still looks good, no weird styling. Heavy and built like a tank. Oh, and for a 2024, dealers are discounting them a lot.
