Hurst Shifter Fix

As many of you might know I broke my Hurst short throw shifter last fall. I decided to fix the "weak" link in a really nice shifter. And for you guys tired of blowing your O-rings out and sending your shifter back to Hurst only to do it again later.... Here is the fix.. A new throw rod that eliminates the O-rings. I am looking for interest for me to make a run of these throw rods. All you need to do is remove the old throw rod, Install a delrin bushing in the shifter block then install the throw rod in the shifter ball and socket and install the shifter block back on the throw rod. There is hardly any vibration at cruise but some tranny whine using the pistol grip shifter. If you had the radio on or the windows open I doubt you would hear it. And some vibration at wide open throttle. It really does tighten up the shifter. The shift is far more positive. If you are interested give me a PM...

The price will be $85 for the kit and $5.00 for shipping for a total of $90. What you get.. The updated throw rod with bushings installed. A bushing for the shifter adapter block and a driver to install bushing into the adapter block. And instructions. I have a couple left of this first run. PM me if you are interested.

70,

I think it would help if you posted some pics and/or instructions. Don't think everyone is following you.

Cool to see you out there doing your own thing, and offering it up.

So what exactly does this do and where does it go? I have a hurst shifter and so far everything is good to go, even when I'm slamming through the gears

Well, If you are using the stock handle then you probably don't need this fix. If you search Hurst shifter broken you can see what happened to mine. The Hurst shifter is prone to "blowing out" the O-rings used to dampen vibrations through the shifter handle. It isn't a "true" Shifter in the sense the O-rings compress or give when you shift. I wanted to fix the O-ring problem and also tighten up the feel of the shifter. Some may love this mod some may not.

Here are a few pics of the shifter block. A horizontal pin holds the block on the shift rod. Once you remove the screw and the pin you can work the block off the large o-rings that are on the throw rod. A bushing is driven into the block. Remove the small C-clip that holds the throw rod in. Then drive out the throw rod from the ball and socket. Assembly is in reverse order, driving the new throw rod in. Then drive the block on to the throw rod making sure the hole lines up for the horizontal pin.

Hey, I am right here.. I have not forgotten about the 6 who want to try this mod. I dont want to accept payment until I have everything ready to ship. It should be wed/thurs of this week. If you have any questions feel free to pm me. Or ask here. I took my shifter out (again 6th time) To verify some numbers for my machinist. Some of you got to see and feel the new mod at the MN challenger's get together.

You can get a pistol grip handle direclty from Hurst as an add'l part. They come with the plastic wood, so if you want carbon fiber or wood, that's another upgrade as well. Just call them direct and they'll talk you through your options from them direct.

Does anybody know if a Dodge dealer sells this other shifter handle? I know I can ask them tomorrow when I go to order my stuff with my Moparbucks, but I was hoping to already have the list. Thanks!:bigthumb:

I took 70challengerrt440's car out for a test drive. You can definitely tell when it goes into each gear.... you feel as if you are one with the transmission. Very nice setup.

I run the Pistol Grip handle. The gear whine was pretty bad at first. But I realized the two grips were acting like an amplifier. So I filled the voids of both halfs with rtv. That really made a difference.

Thanks, 70. If Hurst gets me my isolator kit this week like they're supposed to, I'll pull the shifter this weekend to see if I can get the noise down with two of the three recommendations on the other thread.

It's too bad that I can't check out your upgrade in person. I'm pretty happy with the Hurst when it's tight and doesn't rattle like a cricket. If it's going to be noisy anyway, I might be up for a firmer feel.

I am using the cue ball, 70. I planned on going pistol grip, but that classic style and the white against the black interior just worked for me.

Looks like a couple of plastic bits with holes in them to allow the allen bolts that hold the shifter handle to the shifter to go through them. Called them a third time today and the ensured they'll be on their way. If I get them by Saturday, I'll install them and Spencer's recommendation on Sunday.

I would highly recommend this recently installed mod....

I'll start out by saying when the stock shifter rod was removed it had major damage to the upper and lower o-rings plus damage to the back support section where you could tell the block had impacted it with force.

With the new shifter rod you "know" when your in gear so you will not miss gears as you may with the spongy feeling of the stock shifter rod.

All in all an excellent mod... gives you the feeling like you're shifting a race car.

You do get some vibration noise but nothing that's obnoxious.

Just to clarify 09b5srt... When he refers to "Stock shifter" He means the Hurst short throw shifter.... His shifter could rotate aprox. 20 degs and the 2 o-rings that he mentioned were almost crushed. This shifter was only in for 4 months.

Sounds like my experience with my first Hurst. Second one seems to be holding up better, but I haven't driven as aggressively lately due to lack of time. We'll see how it holds up by year's end.

Hey all.. I have the first 6 throw rods going out this next week. It would be a lot easier for me if who ever wants a kit to add there name here.. And copy and paste the other people on the list to keep a running list. As I get to your name I will contact you. The more I can get the faster they can be made. ( my machinist will use his cnc instead of a manual lathe if the numbers are supported)

Ok here is the start of the list please copy the list and paste it adding your name if you want a kit. the first 6 should be sent out this week.
