I am new here and am looking for helpful information for the purchase consideration of a 2020 / 2021 Challenger R/T 5.7 L with manual transmission. I don't know if I want to get the shaker hood package or not. I like the look and it is more unique in looks of course. It kind of reminds me of my 1976 Pontiac Trans Am 455. It did not have an active air intake flap but it did make the car look special. I eventually changed carbs, added a 2" intake spacer and had a velocity stack air cleaner sticking up through the hole instead. Long time ago ...
... Anyway, do any of you have an opinion about the shaker hood ??
... I read a review that mentioned some overheating issues with city driving, or drive thru stops.
... If you have one, would you do it again?
... If you don't have one, do you wish you did?
I luv the look of the shaker but If yur going to daily drive in rain or snow, water drips into engine compartment

Not particularly for ‘em or against ‘em either way.

This was certainly “mean enough” for me.

Just my preference. But went fully optioned in almost every other way.

But I’m 67..., way past the “Look at me” phase.

I’m even considering removing the Scat Bee emblems, and putting on the 1970 “Challenger” script badges. Keep it kind of a “sleeper.”

Haven’t decided...

Yeah, when I ordered my 21' Scat, I showed my wife both hoods for her opinion. Much to my surprise, she like the hood scoop with twin extractors better than the Shaker. Thanked her for her input.....then went and ordered my Shaker.....My damn Car!

I have a 2019 with shaker hood and have had no problem of course it only has 3400 miles on it and it is a 6 speed. I keep it covered mostly and drive my wife's car. It sure gets a lot of people saying how much they love my car. It does move and sounds Great. I have had no problems with it at all.

This is my 2014 Shaker. I absolutely love it. The only issue I have with it is that, due to the efficiency of this Hemi engine with all of it's computer controls, it's hard to get the damn thing to shake! You can get it to move slightly when revving it, but at idle, the thing runs too smooth to allow the scoop to shake. I'll confess I thought briefly about putting in an aggressive cam just to get it to shake at idle - but I thought better. I'm not complaining, mind you, this thing runs great. Unlike it's original predecessors, it isn't a true ram-air. The incoming air is routed around the intake manifold to the CAI - but it is functional. As far as the over heating issue I've read about here, I have none of that. The car runs cool even in this Utah desert when it's 100+ degrees.

I have a 5.7 shaker currently and my last Scat Pack also was a shaker. I've never had any issues with overheating with either shaker and have gotten more positive responsive from people with the shaker package than without. If you like the looks of a shaker better than buy one.

I love that look of the 1970 - 1973 Trans-AM. I had a 1978. Too bad those 70-73 T/A's cost a fortune now.o_O🤢 I remember back in 1979 (even then they were hard to find for sale) the cost was around $4,500 and that was a reasonable price back then and affordable.(y)

I have it, I love it. The main reason I got a Challenger over a Charger. I had a 2015 Charger and absolutely loved it, but wanted to step up to a 392, so when looking again, for kicks I included Challengers in my searches, then the SHAKER sucked me in, literally.
Only downside is the expense, they are an expensive option for no shown or claimed performance increase.
Well, another slight downside is that it is a bit more involved putting oil in the engine, but literally 1 minute of your time. You remove the SHAKER top, and then you get the the Oil Fill openings. But if you get the super cool SHAKER tool, all the more swagability included.

I made some posts a year or so ago about mine for kicks.
(1) Wonder what is under the SHAKER? Pics included. | Dodge Challenger Forum (challengertalk.com)
It is the most bad ass look you can get on the Challenger. Even though "shaker" is functional it's all cosmetics.
I do my own oil changes and know there is a little more involving removing the shaker (a few 10mm bolts) and they supply a special wrench for that. You can also get a funnel where you can pour the oil in with minimal interference from shaker that takes up more engine compartment space.
Personally for me I am going to go for the hood scoop with twin extractors (standard) on SPWB (No Charge $$)
I prefer to get cooler air to that engine compartment and it frees up space underneath hood. Doesn't add that $2,500+ option "shaker" charge which is fine for that bad ass look.(y)
I see less of these Challengers with "shaker" option on the street so they are a rare sight to behold.

Traded my C6 corvette convertible for this 2019 automatic 5.7L and never regretted it.
Now have over 20,000 miles with no issues.
Got the Shaker Challenger because it’s very retro looking and you do not see a lot of them around.
Lots of compliments and thumbs up wherever I go.
To me it was worth the extra cost.
Love t hat "Go Mango" color. Just curious what made you get rid of the C6 Corvette convertible? In comparing both vehicles you had did you purchase each of them, did you buy new or used?
Which car has faster acceleration? I know that the Corvette was much lighter in weight and the Challenger is more heavier even with smaller 5.7 engine so their must be a total different driving experience and feeling.

I'm a first time Mopar buyer and just ordered an R/T 5.7 shaker in manual transmission. No experience with the questions you asked since I am a brand new owner but the car does look VERY nice, at least to me. And the shaker option helps the motor breathe better and that's always a good thing. There's supposed to be a modest boost in HP due to this.

I think I would regret buying a different configuration.

From my extensive research it does seem that these hemis don't like heat much. Problems idling in traffic are suspected to be the source of various issues that start cropping up as the motor nears the 100k miles mark. One of the key reasons I went for a manual transmission and non-MDS motor was due to these problems.

I think you are going to LOVE your Shaker if you buy one.
Can you imagine the heat on the upper end Challengers with super chargers with all the heat those superchargers put out?

Love my 2016 R/T Shaker. I have the dealer installed Scatpack Lv1 package, so tuned ECM, CAI, high flow filter and cat back exhaust. It’s my daily driver and never have overheating issues etc. I searched high and low for months for the color/options & Shaker. Would do it again in a heatbeat. It’s a head turner everywhere I go,which I honestly didn’t expect would be as much as it is.

Mopar advertises the Shaker as: "The Scat Pack Shaker gets the legendary cold-air grabbing hood for pumping more cold air into the engine and still mimics the “shaking” movement of the powertrain to give drivers a feel of real power when getting behind the wheel.". But in reality the hood scoop delivers more cold air to the engine? I think the statement that "it's all cosmetics." is incorrect. I am new to Mopars (still waiting on my 21' SPWB M6 Shaker). Maybe someone can help me on this. Here is one report:

It is definitely cosmetics, if not "all". But there is no advertised power or performance increase with it either.

I’ve not experienced any overheating issues. I love my shaker. Plenty of SXT’s, R/T’s and scat packs running around where I live but I have yet to see another shaker. The shaker can be made functional for cold air intake with a cover over the air box. I,ll be adding the hellcat headlight intake tube in the next couple weeks before I close my air box in. If you go with the shaker I’d advise to put some protective tape on the hood around the shaker sealing area. It rubs the paint off quickly

Both Challengers with or without shaker option on SPWB 392 engine is advertised factory rating of 475 HP.
My car insurance is the same rate for any of these R/T 392 Challengers SPWB or non WB shaker or not.
The insurance rates go up dramatically when you move up to supercharged models where the HP differences show up like HC SS and Redeye.o_O

My first Challenger was a Redline 2012 RT Plus with about every option except I ordered a manual rather than automatic. On the interstate I would get 26.8 mpg with the cruise set at 77 mph. I set it up to look like a 70 T/A. My new car is a 2019 Scat Pack Shaker. Love the Shaker. Owned it since August 2019, I now have just over 4600 miles. Great car and if it wasn't a Shaker, someone else would probably own it.

I love my R/T Shaker, looks great in the B5 Blue. Lot of Challengers out there, but the ones with the Shaker stand out for sure.

Five pages and nobody brought this up so I guess I'll have to write something... I have a 2018 R/T Plus Shaker. The one "problem" that seems to plague the Shaker is the leaves/debris from trees if you park in a area that has them. Pain in the butt to get between the shaker and hood if you don't want to lift the hood every time. I have a pair of tweezers by the drivers seat to remove them because it bothers me to no end to see crap inside the rubber gasket. Otherwise the Shaker is the only way to go unless Hellcat.

Current HP rating on the NA 392 is 485 HP, 475 ft/Lbs torque. Isn't it?

Can you elaborate on how to protect the paint around the Shaker? "protective tape"? PPF?, recommendations? Thanks!

Man, I have really worried about this when I ordered my Shaker. Thanks for bringing it up. Yeah I have trees at the bottom of my driveway so it is gonna get parked at the top. I have a small set of hemostats I will put in the console. (y)

Does the air filter then get clogged up more frequently from other debris that enter intake?

Yes it is but you aren't planning to add a supercharger are you? The 392 R/T is the same motor on all models of Challengers and Chargers.
