Just wondering what other states are charging for the privilege of driving a car on the roads. In New York they just banged me $201.50 for two years. $119 2 yr. fee + $20 tax + $62.50 for vanity plate fee = ($201.50) They must charge by weight also. My 67 Cadillac registration is $216.00/2 yrs. . 2003 Saturn L200 $171.00 and my 2012 Chevy Suburban $270.00 . And then they can also charge you another $25 bucks if you want to change from the NY white plate to an orange one.

Here in NC, $64 yearly inspection/registration, $255 yearly State Tax (Based off 33K value)

Old pre 96 vehicles get a $10 inspection/registration fee, and only require a visual safety inspection. Easy win.

In Ohio it is $55 a year for renewals.

The thing is you can compare all you want... each state is going to tax everything differently... Some don't have income taxes... some charge very high sales tax...

In the end you pay about the same in each state except for about the Top 5 and lowest 5 tax states... it is just how they tax you that is different is all.

We get screwed here in Arizona. The registration fee is $16 but there is a Vehicle License Tax which is based on the value of the vehicle. For a new run of the mill Challenger R/T it would be about $500-$600 for the first year and drop a bit each subsequent year as the vehicle looses it's value based on some formula the bureaucrats came up with, not based on Blue Book value. That plus the 9.1% sales tax makes buying a vehicle a profitable endevour for the politicians.

We moved from Illinois ($78.00 a year for each vehicle) to Arizona in 2003 with a 2000 Dodge Avenger, 2001 Dodge Dakota quad cab and a 2002 Harley-Davidson Softail and I almost fell over when the lady at AZDMV told me the price! It was about $700.00, YES ARIZONA SUCKS when it comes to Vehicle tax, Registration tax and fee and sales tax they bend you over and stick you hard! My sales tax was 7.9% on the sale price after trade in about $1,950.00 and the other tax is fig. from the MSRP and that was about $649.00 for the first year and then it goes down a bit each year after, something like 10 to 15% a year. I think it will be around $575 next year then $500? The price you pay for great year round weather! I will never go back to Illinois!

Just paid $358 to renew my registration in NC. Annual property tax is based on the value of the car but you could never sell for what they appraise it at.

In Louisiana, the renewal fees are 1/10th of 1% of the vehicle's value at renewal time with a minimum value set by the State at $10,000; so the minimum you will pay is $10 per year. Renewals run every two years so $20 for two years minimum. If your car is worth $30,000, that would be $30 per year or $60 for your 2-year renewal. We have it made on renewals, it's that first plate where they kill you with a 4.00% State sales tax and then your local Parish tax of up to another 5.00% added on top of that (4.75% in my case) so on a high dollar Challenger could be over $4,000 in taxes. I agree with whoever said these States will get their money one way or the other, either up front or every year on renewal.

Tennessee has a 10% sales tax on almost everything, low property taxes, no state income tax.

Vehicle registration is about $30 for a regular car. Add about $3 for the "convenience fee" when paying on line. Save the fee by going to the courthouse and paying in person.

Personalized plates have an annual fee, as do vanity plates. Mine (Sycamore Shoals plus personalization) adds about $100 per year on top of the usual registration:

Arkansas has something similar. A general sales tax rate of 6.5% with I think counties being able to add up to 5.5% (!) to that. So like where I live in Benton County AR the sales tax rate here at over 8% which rivals CA's sales tax rate.

Sales tax on cars is 6.5% and apparently this is not affected by counties. While they can add up to 5.5% to the general sales tax rate this does not apply to sales tax of cars.

Car registration is relatively low cost, about $30 year.

But like TN AR also levies a property tax on vehicles. For 2020 property taxes my 2018 Hellcat was assessed at $10,210. The van being bought after the 2020 assessment period had an assessment value of $0.

So for just the Hellcat the property tax came to $649.36 (mandatory). (There appear to be some voluntary charges that one can agree to like: Voluntary Emergency Medical Service, Voluntary Historical Preservation, Voluntary Road which can increase the mandatory by based on last year's statement from a mandatory $649.36 to $692.24.)

For 2021 my 2020 M-B van was assessed at $4480. My 2020 Scat Pack assessed at $8480. Total assessed value is $12960. I have not yet received a 2021 property tax statement. This will arrive like last time later this year (in May?). I until some time in October to pay the property tax.

My recollection of what I paid in CA for "registration" (and all the not voluntary charges CA tacks) on is more than what I pay here for registration/property tax but close. Too close.

Added: Decided while I was thinking about this to assess my vehicles online. In looking through my files I came upon an email that explains the assessment done in 2021 will result in a tax bill payable between May 1 and October 15 2022. In the email my estimated 2021 Property taxes with both the M-B van and the Scat Pack assessed will be around $890.

I assessed both my vehicles online and will receive some confirmation email in a day or two.

Vehicle licensing has become a cash cow for many states. Used to be that WSP would go around trying to bust Vancouver, WA residents for having much less expensive Oregon vehicle registrations. Those days are gone forever.

Oregon, like most blue states, never saw a tax or fee increase that they didn't love. Just renewed my 2021 R/T registration. $441 for two years. Oregon also has a DEQ requirement that used to be very modest but is now in the neighborhood of $32. No sales tax here (yet).

I have two cars (the other is a vintage Corvette that I rarely drive) and several motorcycles. So DMV fees add up to real money here especially after you include the costs for insurance.

All the while, while raking in the dough, law makers are weeping about how they have no money to fix the roads and bridges. Fortunately, they do have plenty of money to spend on things citizens could care less about.

There's another component to this of course. Oregon is part of the "green new deal" insanity and is pushing EVs, bicycle travel and public transportation like there is no tomorrow. The flip side is that they are crying about the loss of fuel tax revenue. Several studies have been done and it's looking like Oregon will be one of the first to tax miles driven. Won't that be fun? Oregon has had a weight per mile tax on commercial vehicles since forever.

People get the government they deserve. What irks me most is that I didn't vote for any of these characters. Never have. Never will. America has slid down the hill a long way since the Boston tea party.

It is what it is. While CA doesn't charge property tax on vehicles its registration fee is higher and the extra fees adds up.

The flip side is here in AR while the registration fee is but $30 property tax obviously boosts this to my WAG close to but under (if only a bit) what I would be paying in CA.

CA has some constraints on raising taxes. Thus it resorts to fees and such to generate income in lieu of trying to get a tax increase passed. (My memory though all CA has to do is claim the taxes (on gasoline) would be for the "roads" and voters would rush to vote the tax bill into law. That in the past CA has reneged on this for the roads BS apparently doesn't deter CA voters from voting in at least higher gasoline taxes I think 3 times now...)

AR is I guess a bit less constrained and has implemented property taxes on vehicles.

One feature I like here is for example when I traded in my Hellcat for a new Scat Pack and this resulted in me owing no sales tax on the Scat Pack. This saved me over $3000.

In CA when I traded in my Scat Pack for a new Hellcat I had to pay sales tax on what I paid for the Hellcat.

In Virginia you pay for your tags and registration which is about 100.00 good for 2 years. Annual safety inspection, about 18.00. Property tax on the vehicle that can range from 18.00 dollars to over 1000.00 dollars depending on the value of the vehicle. Property taxes on vehicles, while unpopular to many from other states, takes the place of your county income tax. In reality, you can be a billionaire in Virginia, live in an apartment, drive a 1980 Honda and pay Zero in county tax. In Kentucky, if I remember correctly, I pay about 160.00 a year for my Challenger. No inspections on anything.
