I have this whining noise in my 2015 scat pack. Same conditions as the rest of you. 65ish, lightly press the gas and the noise begins. Let off the gas and the noise immediately stops.

The sound reminds me of the old school Chevelles. They made this sort of noise which is why I wrote it off as normal. Looks like its not though.

Ok, so check this out, not one...but two driveshafts were shipped to my dealer, both showed up damaged!!!

And now this part is on a national back order, so I'm stuck waiting LOL I promise to report back when it's done to let everyone know if this really quiets things down.

Wow..mine also has very slight howl 40-50 mph. Goes away past 50+
Brand new 2017..497 miles
I'd monitor that - if it changes, or turns up at other speeds = not a good sign, something's not wearing right if that's the case.

I started hearing a groan and whirring turning at low speeds in the parking lot recently. Took my 2015 SP with 8500 miles in this morning. They serviced it with 680833381AA per service bulletin 03-008-16 which is totally different than what the owners manual tells you to use. I bet they put the wrong lube in at the factory. It also has a 100-150 mile wear in before the lube fully penetrates the clutches.

Update: got the new driveshaft in today.

I don't have a lot of seat time, but I do think it less howl-ly while cruising, especially in the 40-50 mph range when the car drops into 7/8 gears and you coast and go on and of the gas. Car isn't completely quiet, I can hear the rear end a little bit, but only with the radio off. Overall for what this car is, it's pretty damn quiet when you want it to be. I want to say this is a noticeable improvement. Will re-evaluate as seat time continues...

Will see what the wife says the next time we're out cruising, she commented on the howling on a previous ride.

Car is running great, drove around a 5.0 today while pulling onto the highway. Spanked him pretty good! :)

250 miles on my 2017 SRT and I have the loud howling noise at almost all speeds. Had it at the dealership today and they are ordering new diff fluid. The mechanic has a Challenger and noticed right away that this was not right. He said they may also have put wrong fluid in at factory. If it does not help, he said they will replace the diff. They are also ordering a new ventilation fan for my drivers seat that is making a high pitched, whining sound. Also had a software update done since my unconnect over the last couple days kept locking up. Not a good start to my first Challenger.

You'll be getting a new rear diff, new oil won't help. Hope the next one is better.

Figured that I should post an update for anyone out there holding out hope that this may quiet the howl down...I think my car sounds the same as it did before the drive shaft swap and I think most of the noise/howl comes from the differential which is probably considered normal. Just fwiw..

Lube change fixed mine?

The dealer swapped out my rear end differential today and it is 100% better. Very faint noise which the tech, who also has a Challenger, said is normal. Prior one was so loud it ruined the drive. New one is quiet, quiet, quiet.

i may have already commented on this thread but i have new info on my issue(likely old info because nothing changed) No matter what the dealer says gear noise like that is NOT normal. that is the exact same noise mine has. that absolutely sounds like gears. i have built many differentials and ALL noise can be adjusted out. i brought mine in with explicit instructions. that i DO NOT want whole diff replaced unless internal parts are found in need of replacement. and that NO oNE is to drive the car if they do install new diff. i am going to do all proper break in and if it make noise there will be no doubt that it was carefully broken in. there is no way to know exactly how but bench testing is done by mfg. but i treated it like virgin gears i went 35 mph for 6-8 miles and allowed it to cool completely. i repeated it again never giving more than 25% throttle. after the third cycle i started testing slightly higher speeds up to the 68 mph starting point of the old noise. the new diff has exact same sound at exact same speed. Now from all of my experience it is a virtual impossibility that both are exact. i also told the dealer to investigate harmonics. i am pretty sure that this is NOT gear noise now no matter how much it sounds that way. to top off this now the new one does make noise when turning in parking lots. there is a TSB to add a different friction modifier. but the point is that the dealer will not be able to find the noise or its root. i am going to find it myself then do my best to inform them and get it warrantied. my real issue is that i want to start some mods so i am having them document it before hand and going to start a case just to make sure i dont have to hear that the shifter caused it or one piece drive shaft or something like that. there is obviously a problem the noise is hard to talk over and will have to be fixed. if its harmonics the fix may be something as easy as clamping rubber isos in an axle or such. if any of you get a direct answer as to the solution please share

2017 Scat Pack 6-speed manual differential noise

I saw a lot of different responses. I apologize, if a dealer says it is normal after taking a technician on a ride and reproducing it at will, what is the next remedy. Was there a recall, call customer care, or keep it going back.

If dealer, a tech, after a test ride says the noise is normal there is no remedy. Just recognize the noise is the result, the "price" one pays, of having a differential that can hold its own and them some when coupled with a big old honking high power/big torque V8 engine. You can't expect the output of a high performance V8 (which I note is a rather noisy bit of kit in its own right) can be handled by a whisper quiet transmission and differential.

Sure, there is a slight chance that the tech's opinion is wrong. In this case then the diff should get noisier and possibly manifest other symptoms that would make it clear the noise is not normal.

You don't mention how many miles are on your car but assuming the number is in the thousands it is a rare problem diff that can generate abnormal noise (which yours has been deemed to not be generating) for thousands and thousands of miles without manifesting any signs of the "condition" worsening. Diffs are under considerable stress even in normal usage and any weakness generally makes itself known sooner rather than later.

If you want, and my SOP is to do this, get the diff fluid changed. I would recommend using the factory recommended fluid and any factory recommended fluid additive. That is about all one can do to help the diff deliver a long and trouble free service life. (The other is avoid abusing the hardware.)

My experience with diffs (and transmissions, and engines I might add) is they have covered hundreds of thousands of miles with no complaint. All I do is treat them to a regular fluid change -- using factory recommended lube fluid -- and avoid beating the heck out of the hardware.

Let me add you can certainly seek out a 2nd opinion regarding the noise of the diff. If there is a problem this can be handled by any dealer not just the one you first talked to and from which you heard essentially there is no problem.

the ZFs have some degree of whine - but some can be more pronounced than others.

the issue is the ring gear is welded, so if there's any problems - there is no adjustment.
-replacing it is the only option if there's evidence of being out of tolerance /excess noise.

and there are less - than - reputable dealers, that try to brush off customer complaints as "that's normal".

They get lower rates for warranty work...and that's where the tactic of telling customers their problem isn't a 'warranty item'.
